En la angiotomografía computarizada preoperatoria se objetivó una variante anatómica de la arteria carótida externa (ACE); el procedimiento transcurrió sin incidencias. El objetivo de este estudio fue presentar las imágenes de una variante anatómica atípica de la ACE y revisar la literatura científica al respecto. En las series publicadas se han descrito múltiples variantes anatómicas en la disposición de las ramas de la ACE, asx00ED; como la existencia de troncos comunes. En el caso presentado, la ACE se trifurca tras la emergencia de un tronco tirolingual, dando la arteria facial, la faríngea ascendente y la ACE distal. Este patrón se ha descrito en aproximadamente un 1-8.9% de los casos según las series publicadas y constituye una de las variantes atípicas menos reportadas en la literatura. El reconocimiento de estas variantes anatómicas es esencial para mejorar la seguridad y eficacia de las intervenciones quirúrgicas a nivel carotídeo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract We present the case of a 50-year-old man who underwent carotid endarterectomy. Preoperative computed tomography angiography revealed an anatomical variant of the external carotid artery (ECA); the procedure went without incident. The objective of this study was to present images of an atypical anatomical variant of ECA and review the scientific literature on the matter. In the published series, multiple anatomical variants in the arrangement of the ECA branches have been described, as well as the existence of common trunks. In the case presented, the ECA trifurcates after the emergence of a thyrolingual trunk, giving the facial artery, the ascending pharyngeal artery, and the distal ECA. This pattern has been described in 1-8.9% of cases according to published series and constitutes one of the least reported atypical variants in the literature. The recognition of these anatomical variants is essential to improve the safety and effectiveness of surgical interventions at the carotid level.]]></p></abstract>
