Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de una intervención educativa en médicos residentes sobre IE y empatía.  Material y métodos: Estudio preexperimental, cuasiexperimental y longitudinal. La muestra la conformaron 18 residentes de primer año, seleccionados por obtener los puntajes más altos (n = 9) y más bajos (n = 9) del instrumento de medición de IE Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) y empatía de Jefferson. Recibieron una intervención educativa durante cinco sesiones. Posterior a esto se aplicaron nuevamente los instrumentos de evaluación para la comparación mediante la prueba t de Student utilizando SPSS.  Resultados: La edad de la muestra fue de 27.05 ± 3.81 años, el 56% fueron mujeres. Al realizar la comparación IE antes y después de la intervención educativa se obtuvo una diferencia significativa (p = 0.031). No fue así en cuanto a la empatía (p = 0.891).  Conclusiones: Las intervenciones educativas son fundamentales en el área de la salud, ya que permiten detectar y apoyar a los médicos residentes sobre la IE y empatía permitiendo fortalecer el desarrollo de un equilibrio emocional, lo cual tiene un impacto positivo en su quehacer profesional.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Background: Emotional intelligence (EI) has gained relevance, the incidence of depression and anxiety within health personnel has increased due to the lack of education on the correct management of emotions and stress.  Objective: To evaluate the effect of an educational intervention in medical residents on EI and empathy.  Matherial and methods: Pre-experimental and longitudinal study. The sample consisted of 18 first-year residents, selected for obtaining the highest (n = 9) and lowest (n = 9) scores on the EI measurement instrument Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24) and Jefferson's empathy. They received an educational intervention for five sessions. After this, the evaluation instruments were applied again for comparison with the Student t test using SPSS.  Results: The age of the sample was 27.05 ± 3.81 years, 56% were women. When comparing EI before and after the educational intervention, a significant difference was obtained (p = 0.031). This was not the case for empathy (p = 0.891).  Conclusions: Educational interventions are essential in the healthcare field, as they allow for the identification and support of medical residents regarding EI and empathy, strengthening the development of emotional balance, which has a positive impact on their professional work.]]></p></abstract>
