El acibenzolar-S-metil (ASM) es un inductor de las defensas de las plantas, la cual es efectiva contra enfermedades provocadas por virus, bacterias y hongos. En el presente estudio, se evaluó el efecto del ASM en el crecimiento micelial, la germinación de esporas y en la reducción de la severidad de la marchitez causada por Fon1, así como, su toxicidad en plantas de sandía. La inoculación del hongo se realizó cuatro días después de la aplicación, vía riego y foliar, del ASM a concentraciones de 15, 20, 30 y 40 mg L-1 en plántulas con dos hojas verdaderas de la variedad Sugar Baby, la cual no tiene genes de resistencia a Fon. Los resultados in vitro mostraron que el ASM tiene efecto directo en la germinación de esporas y el crecimiento micelial de Fon1. También, la aplicación del inductor en las plantas de sandía redujo significativamente (P &lt; 0.05) la severidad de la marchitez causada por Fusarium. La aplicación vía riego del inductor de defensa (15 mg L-1), fue más eficaz que la aplicación foliar, ya que redujo en 100% la severidad de la marchitez causada por Fon1 en las plantas de sandía. La dosis de 30 y 40 mg L-1 causaron síntomas de toxicidad, ya que las plantas mostraron significativamente menor altura, número de hojas y peso fresco aéreo, en comparación con las plantas no inoculadas y sin tratar.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Vascular wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum (Fon) is the main fungal disease of watermelon crops. Acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) is an inducer of plant defenses, which is effective against diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. In the present study, the effect of ASM on mycelial growth, spore germination and the reduction of the severity of wilting caused by Fon1, as well as its toxicity in watermelon plants was evaluated. The inoculation of the fungus was carried out four days after the application, via irrigation and foliar, of the ASM at concentrations of 15, 20, 30 and 40 mg L-1 in seedlings with two true leaves of the Sugar Baby variety, which does not have Fon resistance genes. In vitro results showed that ASM has a direct effect on spore germination and mycelial growth of Fon1. Also, the application of the defense inducer in watermelon plants significantly reduced (P &lt; 0.05) the severity of wilt caused by Fusarium. The application via irrigation of the defense inducer (15 mg L-1) was more effective than the foliar application, since it reduced the severity of wilting caused by Fon1 in watermelon plants by 100%. The doses of 30 and 40 mg L-1 caused toxicity symptoms, since the plants showed significantly lower height, number of leaves and fresh aerial weight, compared to non-inoculated and untreated plants.]]></p></abstract>
