Although there is evidence of viable acorn production, no seedlings or saplings have been found across the range of occurrence for this species.  Hypothesis: We tested for spatial aggregation and factors determining acorn production, hypothesizing that Q. brandegeei trees would be less distant from one another in regions with higher precipitation and that tree attributes and climatic variables would co-determine acorn presence.  Study site and dates: Baja California Sur, Mexico, 2016-2017  Methods: We conducted a Ripley&#8217;s K analysis to determine each population&#8217;s spatial pattern (random, uniform, clumped) across 12 populations and a total of 194 individuals. To find the impact of environmental factors on acorn production we conducted a series of generalized linear models on eight climatic variables.  Results: Ripley&#8217;s K analysis revealed that Q. brandegeei is a highly clumped species, with the highest rate of aggregation occurring within 0-25 meters. Region but not climatic cues were found to be important determinants of presence of acorns.  Conclusions:  High aggregation in clumps and low evidence of acorn production in some populations suggests that there is a niche attrition for this species, which is confined to very specific microsites along ephemeral riverbeds. Suitable recruitment areas could be reduced even further under the hotter and drier climate predicted for the region.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes y especie de estudio:  El encino Quercus brandegeei se encuentra amenazado debido a su distribución relictual, restringida a los márgenes de arroyos temporales, sus poblaciones decrecientes, y la falta de regeneración. Aunque hay evidencia de producción de bellotas viables, no se ha observado la presencia de plántulas o juveniles a lo largo de la distribución.  Hipótesis:  Evaluamos el patrón de agregación espacial y los factores que determinan la producción de bellotas, bajo las hipótesis de una mayor agregación en regiones con mayor precipitación y de que la presencia de bellotas dependerá de atributos individuales de los árboles y de las variables climáticas.  Sitio y años del estudio:  Baja California Sur, México, 2016-2017.  Métodos:  El patrón de distribución espacial (aleatorio, uniforme o agregado) de cada población se evaluó mediante la K de Ripley en 12 poblaciones y un total de 194 individuos. El impacto de las variables ambientales sobre la producción de bellotas se determinó mediante modelos lineales generalizados utilizando ocho variables climáticas.  Resultados:  Los individuos de Q. brandegeei se encuentran altamente agregados en distancias de 0-25 m. La presencia de bellotas dependió más de la región geográfica que de las variables climáticas.  Conclusiones:  La alta agregación y baja producción de bellotas en algunas poblaciones sugiere que existe una reducción de nicho para Q. brandegeei, confinado a micrositios muy específicos a lo largo de los lechos de los ríos efímeros. Las áreas adecuadas de reclutamiento podrían reducirse aún más con el clima más cálido y seco pronosticado para la región.]]></p></abstract>
