In pines, scion-rootstock genetic compatibility could improve grafted plant production.  Objectives:  To evaluate scion-rootstock compatibility of Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. &amp; Cham. in response to genotypic variation.  Materials and methods:  Scions of four outstanding genotypes (G105, G106, G114 and G115) were grafted onto rootstocks of the same half-sib families (F105, F106, F114 and F115) in all combinations in a randomized complete block design. The following were evaluated: grafting, survival, needle development and growth in length and diameter of the graft.  Results and discussion:  The analysis of variance indicated that grafting ranged from 70 to 82.5 %; the effect was significant only for the scion genotype factor (P &lt; 0.0001), being higher with G115. The genotype*family interaction had significant effect (P &lt; 0.0001) on graft survival; the best combinations were G115 + F114 (85 %), G114 + F105 (80 %), G115 + F105 (75 %) and G115 + F106 (75 %). G105 (26 cm) and G115 (2 mm) had the highest values (P &lt; 0.05) for growth in length and diameter, respectively. All the grafts developed needles after five months.  Conclusions:  Grafting with genotype G115 and family F105, in combination with any family or genotype, were the most successful. Scions and rootstocks of the same genotype or family were not favorable for graft compatibility in P. patula.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  Los huertos clonales incrementan la ganancia genética, generalmente se establecen con injertos. En pinos, la compatibilidad genética púa-patrón podría mejorar la producción de planta injertada.  Objetivos:  Evaluar la compatibilidad entre púa y portainjerto de Pinus patula Schiede ex Schltdl. &amp; Cham. en respuesta a la variación genotípica.  Materiales y métodos:  Se injertaron púas de cuatro genotipos sobresalientes (G105, G106, G114 y G115) sobre patrones de las mismas familias de medios hermanos (F105, F106, F114 y F115) en todas sus combinaciones con el diseño bloques completos al azar. Se evaluó prendimiento, supervivencia, desarrollo de acículas y crecimiento en longitud y diámetro del injerto.  Resultados y discusión:  El análisis de varianza indicó que el prendimiento de los injertos varió de 70 a 82.5 %; el efecto fue significativo solo en el factor genotipo de la púa (P &lt; 0.0001), siendo mayor con el G115. La interacción genotipo*familia tuvo efecto significativo (P &lt; 0.0001) en la supervivencia del injerto; las mejores combinaciones fueron G115 + F114 (85 %), G114 + F105 (80 %), G115 + F105 (75 %) y G115 + F106 (75 %). El G105 (26 cm) y G115 (2 mm) mostraron los valores más altos (P &lt; 0.05) en el crecimiento en longitud y diámetro, respectivamente. A los cinco meses, todos los injertos desarrollaron acículas.  Conclusiones:  Los injertos realizados con el genotipo G115 y familia F105, en combinación con cualquier familia o genotipo, fueron los más exitosos. Las púas y patrones del mismo genotipo o familia no favorecieron la compatibilidad de los injertos en P. patula.]]></p></abstract>
