</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract In this article argues that the concept of modus vivendi allows us to think about the political space more comprehensively than the ideal theory - non ideal theory approach. In contemporary political theory a debate arises on how to conceive a political activity in the world. Two of the positions that account for the political space are the modus vivendi and the ideal theory - non ideal theory. The analyzes made in this research provides their strengths and disadvantages; however modus vivendi comes up on top. The theoretical framework of analysis of the ideal theory - nonideal theory is the utopian realism of John Rawls; for the analysis of modus vivendi, contemporary political realism. The conclusion is that the modus vivendi gives an account of the elements that really make up the political space.
</abstract>
