Los bosques mixtos han sido considerados estratégicos para lidiar con el cambio climático, por lo que conocer sus procesos fenológicos contribuye a generar información útil para anticipar cambios en la composición de especies ante el calentamiento global. En este estudio describimos mensualmente a lo largo de un año las fenofases de cinco especies coexistentes en un bosque mixto, en una región del norte de México altamente diversa pero susceptible a la sequía. Encontramos diversas fenofases entre coníferas y latifoliadas, comprendidas en reposo, caída de hojas, desarrollo de yemas, elongación del follaje y formación y crecimiento de órganos reproductivos, con sus diferencias temporales entre ellas. La especie Pinus engelmannii, tuvo el inicio más temprano de sus fenofases, mientras que Arbutus bicolor presentó un inicio tardío, así como una menor duración en sus fenofases con respecto a las otras especies estudiadas. La mayor duración en tiempo en las diferentes fenofases se presentó en Juniperus deppeana mientras que Arbutus bicolor tuvo periodos más cortos. Aunque se requieren más datos complementarios de clima, así como de acortar la periodicidad de los muestreos, nuestros resultados se interpretan como respuestas a mecanismos fisiológicos que presentan las especies como estrategias de respuesta ante el entorno. Dada la limitación de la temporalidad y el esfuerzo operativo, los resultados no son del todo concluyentes sin embargo constituyen una base esencial para continuar el monitoreo y potenciar el entendimiento de la fenología en los bosques mixtos de cara a los escenarios de sequía pronosticada.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Forest ecosystems are modifying their phenology as a consequence of climate variability. Mixed forests have been considered strategic to cope with climate change, so knowing their phenological processes contributes to generate useful information to anticipate changes in species composition in the face of global warming. In this study, we describe the phenophases of five coexisting species in a mixed forest in a highly diverse but drought-susceptible region of northern Mexico on a monthly basis over the course of a year. We found several phenophases among conifers and broadleaved trees, including resting, leaf fall, bud development, foliage elongation, and formation and growth of reproductive organs, with their temporal differences among them. The species Pinus engelmannii had the earliest onset of its phenophases, while Arbutus bicolor had a late onset and shorter phenophases than the other species studied. The longest duration of the different phenophases was observed in Juniperus deppeana, while Arbutus bicolor had shorter periods. Although more complementary climate data are required, as well as shortening the periodicity of sampling, our results are interpreted as responses to physiological mechanisms presented by the species as strategies to respond to the environment. Given the limitation of time and operational labor, the results are not entirely conclusive, however they constitute an essential basis for further monitoring and to enhance the understanding of phenology in mixed forests in the face of predicted drought scenarios.]]></p></abstract>
