En este estudio, se analizó la dinámica de fragmentación en las coberturas vegetales y usos de suelo en la región de la Sierra Madre Oriental del estado de San Luis Potosí, México, para evaluar su impacto sobre las áreas de distribución potencial de la avifauna y las regiones prioritarias para la conservación. Se realizó trabajo de campo y se colectó información sobre la distribución de las aves, a partir de la cual se elaboraron modelos de distribución potencial de especies con el programa MaxEnt. La información fue comparada con los datos del análisis de fragmentación obtenidos, a partir de lo cual se determinó que, las coberturas de vegetación natural son proclives a la fragmentación, mientras que las coberturas asociadas a las actividades humanas tienden a conectarse e incrementar su superficie. La zona centro y suroeste de la región tiene la mayor tendencia a la fragmentación de la cobertura vegetal, dando lugar a una alta heterogeneidad en el paisaje. Lo anterior afecta las áreas de distribución de 34% de las especies modeladas debido a la pérdida de conectividad entre hábitats y al aumento del efecto de borde. Los resultados confirman la importancia de la región como un centro de alta diversidad avifaunística y evidencia la necesidad de establecer acciones de conservación a corto plazo para mantener las áreas de distribución de importancia para las aves en la zona.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Fragmentation and land use cover change are key factors for global biodiversity loss. In this work, we analyzed the processes of fragmentation in land use cover in the region of the Sierra Madre Oriental in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to assess the impact on the distribution of birds and important areas for conservation. Fieldwork was conducted and distribution records of birds were collected, from which species distribution models with MaxEnt were developed. This information was compared with fragmentation data obtained from landscape metrics. The results indicate that natural land cover is prone to fragmentation, while land use (i.e. agriculture) tends to connect and increase in area. Both, Central and Southwestern regions have the greatest tendency to land cover fragmentation, leading to a high heterogeneity in the landscape. This affects the distribution areas of 34% of modeled species due to loss of connectivity between habitats and rising edges. These results confirm the importance of the region as a center of high bird diversity and highlights the need for short-term conservation actions to maintain the distribution areas of importance for birds.]]></p></abstract>
