MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio observacional, retrospectivo y transversal consistente en la revisón y análisis de los expedientes clínicos de pacientes atendidas en el Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora entre diciembre del 2020 y diciembre del 2024 con diagnóstico de óbito fetal.  RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron 143 pacientes con diagnóstico de óbito. En 75 casos (54.4%) se confirmó el diagnóstico histopatológico de corioamnionitis, mientras que en 68 (47.5%) la placenta se reportó sin alteraciones. Se encontró que 14 pacientes eran mayores de 35 años y 4 superaban los 40 años. Nueve pacientes (6.29%) tenían diabetes mellitus, 10 (6.99%) hipertensión arterial y 1 (0.69%) hipotiroidismo. En relación con las semanas de gestación al momento de la muerte, el 30.7% correspondió a prematuros extremos, 23.07% a agudos, 9.79% a moderados, 13.98% a tardíos y 22.37% a embarazos de término.  CONCLUSIONES: A pesar de los avances en el control prenatal, la muerte fetal intrauterina sigue siendo un problema de salud pública debido a la repercusión psicosocial que implica para las pacientes, sus parejas y familias. Por ello, la prevención de esta fatalidad debe ser prioritaria. Si bien en casi un 30% de los casos de óbito fetal no se encuentra una causa identificable, el estudio histopatológico de la placenta es un auxiliar valioso para comprender la posible relación entre la infección intrauterina y la muerte fetal.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of histological chorioamnionitis in fetuses diagnosed with intrauterine death.  METHODS AND MATERIALS:  This observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study consisted of reviewing and analyzing the clinical records of patients diagnosed with fetal death and treated at the Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora between December 2020 and December 2024.  RESULTS:  A total of 143 patients diagnosed with fetal death were included. Of those, 75 cases (54.4%) were confirmed as having chorioamnionitis, while 68 cases (47.5%) had normal placentas. Fourteen patients were over 35 years of age, and four were over 40. Nine patients (6.29%) had diabetes mellitus, ten (6.99%) had hypertension, and one (0.69%) had hypothyroidism. Regarding the gestational age at the time of death, 30.7% were extremely premature, 23.07% were moderate, 9.79% were late, 13.98% were full term, and 22.37% were full term.  CONCLUSIONS:  Despite advances in prenatal care, intrauterine fetal death remains a public health problem due to its psychosocial impact on patients, their partners, and families. Therefore, preventing this fatality must be a priority. While an identifiable cause is not found in nearly 30% of fetal death cases, a histopathological study of the placenta can help understand the possible relationship between intrauterine infection and fetal death.]]></p></abstract>
