El objetivo del presente estudio fue caracterizar la diversidad de poblaciones de maíces nativos mediante variables de mazorca y grano para generar indicadores de la agrobiodiversidad; además, determinar su distribución espacial en el área de recolectas e identificar áreas potenciales de conservación mediante herramientas geoestadísticas. Se recolectaron 36 poblaciones de maíz nativo en la región occidental de la Reserva de la Biósfera &#8220;El Cielo&#8221;, en Tamaulipas, México. Las recolectas fueron clasificadas racialmente y se analizaron variables cuantitativas y cualitativas de mazorca y grano; asimismo, variables ecogeográficas como altitud, longitud, precipitación media, temperatura media y altitud. Se encontraron las razas Celaya, Ratón, Tuxpeño, Tuxpeño Norteño, Olotillo, Cónico, Tabloncillo y Elotes Occidentales. La altitud se consideró como el factor ecogeográfico con mayor influencia en la distribución de maíces nativos. Se llevó a cabo un análisis de componentes principales para variables cuantitativas y ecogeográficas; además, fueron efectuados análisis de riqueza y diversidad. La mayor riqueza y diversidad se encontró en altitudes medias-bajas, de 400 a 1200 msnm, considerándose como áreas potenciales para la conservación in situ de la agrobiodiversidad de maíces nativos en la parte occidental de la Reserva de la Biósfera &#8220;El Cielo&#8221;, Tamaulipas, México.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary Analyses of native maize populations diversity provide information on their distribution and allow to identify strategic points where they can be cultivated and ensure their conservation. The objective of this study was to characterize the diversity of native maize populations using traits of the ear and grain to generate agrobiodiversity indicators, determine their spatial distribution in the collection area, and identify potential conservation areas using geostatistical tools. Thirty-six populations of native maize were collected in the Western side of &#8220;El Cielo&#8221; Biosphere Reserve, in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The accessions were classified by race, and quantitative and qualitative traits of the cob and grain were analyzed, along with eco-geographic variables such as altitude, longitude, mean precipitation, mean temperature and altitude. The races Celaya, Ratón, Tuxpeño, Tuxpeño Norteño, Olotillo, Cónico, Tabloncillo and Elotes Occidentales were found. Altitude was considered as the ecogeographic factor with the largest influence on the distribution of native maize. A principal component analysis was performed for quantitative and ecogeographic variables; in addition, analyses of richness and diversity were also carried out. The greatest richness and diversity were found at medium-low altitude, 400 to 1200 masl, being considered as potential areas for in situ conservation of native maize agrobiodiversity in the Western side of &#8220;El Cielo&#8221; Biosphere Reserve, Tamaulipas, Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
