En una comarca agrícola de la provincia de La Coruña (noroeste de España), cuyo suelo es franco arenoso, se seleccionaron parcelas con tres usos (cereal de invierno, maíz y huerta). Se analizó la estabilidad estructural del horizonte superficial con la finalidad de: a) identificar los mecanismos que causan la rotura de los agregados bajo los tres usos del suelo; b) evaluar el potencial de la prueba de estabilidad para predecir la sensibilidad al encostrado y a la erosión en esas parcelas, y c) caracterizar desde el punto de vista micromorfológico una costra desarrollada en un lecho de siembra (cereal de invierno). Los agregados se sometieron simultáneamente a tres tratamientos: humectación rápida (T1), desagregación mecánica por agitación tras rehumectación en etanol (T2) y humectación lenta por capilaridad (T3). El efecto de cada proceso fue evaluado mediante el diámetro medio ponderado. Los valores del DMPT1, DMPT2 y DMPT3 obtenidos, indicaron que la desagregación mecánica debida al impacto de las gotas de lluvia constituye el principal mecanismo de fragmentación de los agregados, seguido por el estallido, debido a la compresión del aire ocluido durante el proceso de humectación. La textura franco arenosa induce una importante macroporosidad que podría contribuir a la reducción del estallido por acción del aire atrapado. Aun así, estos suelos son sensibles al encostrado, fenómeno influenciado por el laboreo convencional y por la acción de la lluvia acumulada sobre el suelo desnudo o con escasa protección vegetal. Los estudios micromorfológicos de una costra sedimentaria desarrollada sobre estos suelos, revelan que está formada por una capa densa con un espesor inferior a 1 cm.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Soil disaggregation by the effect of water is a consequence of various physical and physical-chemical mechanisms influenced by soil type, texture, organic matter and water content, among other factors. In an agricultural district of La Coruña province (northwestern Spain), whose soil is sandy loam, plots with three soil uses (winter wheat, maize and orchard) were selected. We analyzed the structural stability of the surface layer in order to (i) identify the mechanisms that cause aggregate breakdown under the three soil uses, (ii) assess the ability of stability test for predicting crusting and erosion susceptibility in these plots, and (iii) characterize a crust developed on a seedbed (winter wheat) from a micromorphological perspective. The aggregates were subjected simultaneously to three treatments: fast wetting (T1); mechanical breakdown by stirring after pre-rewetting in ethanol (T2) and slow wetting by capillarity (T3). The effect of each process was evaluated by mean weight diameter (MWD). The values resulting from MWDT1, MWDT2 and MWDT3 indicate that mechanical breakdown due to rainfall impact was the main aggregate-breakdown mechanism, followed by slaking due to compression of entrapped air during wetting. The sandy loam texture induces important macroporosity, which could contribute to reduce slaking. Even so, these soils are susceptible to crusting, a phenomenon affected by conventional tillage and by the action of accumulated rainfall on bare soil or with low vegetation cover. Micromorphological studies of a sedimentary crust developed on these soils reveal that this crust consists of a dense layer less than 1 cm thick.]]></p></abstract>
