However, coffee production faces phytosanitary problems in the form of coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix). The main goal of the present study was to evaluate extracts from Azadirachta indica and Piper auritum as potential biofungicides. In in vitro assays, ethanolic and non-polar foliar extracts from A. indica and P. auritum were applied in three concentrations 1000, 3000, and 5000 ppm, against H. vastatrix. While in the in vivo assay, only ethanolic extracts were applied to coffee plants Typica diseased with H. vastatrix. Both extracts inhibited about 99% of the germination of H. vastatrix uredospores in vitro. On coffee plants of &#8220;Typica&#8221; variety infected with H. vastatrix that were treated with the ethanolic extracts from P. auritum and A. indica, no disease appeared during the 20 days of treatment. The inhibitory effect was not significantly similar in those treated with copper oxychloride on days 15 and 20 (Tukey P &#8804; 0.05). We suggest that the evaluated plant extracts are used as a natural alternative for the preventive control of H. vastatrix in small greenhouses.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El cafeto (Coffea arabica) es uno de los cultivos industriales y económicos importantes en México; sin embargo, se ha enfrentado a problemas fitosanitarios por Hemileia vastatrix. En la actualidad existen alternativas biotecnológicas como lo es el desarrollo de biofungicidas. El objetivo principal fue evaluar la actividad biofungicida de extractos foliares de Piper auritum y Azadirachta indica sobre Hemileia vastatrix a través de ensayos in vitro e in vivo. En el ensayo in vitro, se aplicaron extractos etanólicos y apolares de A. indica y P. auritum a concentraciones de 1000, 3000 y 5000 ppm sobre H. vastatrix; mientras que en el ensayo in vivo, se aplicaron los extractos etanólicos en las hojas de café Typica enfermas con H. vastatrix. En el ensayo in vitro, los extractos de A. indica y P. auritum inhibieron la germinación de H. vastatrix en un 99%. Asimismo, la aplicación del extracto etanólico de P. auritum y A. indica en hojas de café enfermas, contuvo el incremento de la infección durante los 20 días. Este efecto no fue similar en aquellos tratados con oxicloruro de cobre en el día 15 y 20 (Tukey P &#8804; 0.5). Sugerimos que los extractos vegetales evaluados podrían ser una alternativa natural para el manejo preventivo de H. vastatrix.]]></p></abstract>
