Antecedentes: Los tumores del cuerpo carotídeo son paragangliomas localizados en la región cervical. La incidencia de estos tumores es de 1 en 30,000 a 100,000 personas en la población general. El tratamiento de elección es la resección quirúrgica, estos tumores se han relacionado a un importante sangrado.  Métodos: Prospectivo, se realizó la medición de la volumetría (cm3) prequirúrgica por medio de angiotomografía. Usamos prueba de Spearman para la correlación entre volumen, sangrado transquirúrgico y tiempo quirúrgico.  Resultado: Se identificaron 29 pacientes en el período de tiempo de marzo de 2017 a abril de 2019. El 86% de los pacientes fueron mujeres, la media de edad fue de 55 años; el 52% fueron tumores derechos, el 34%, izquierdos y el 14%, bilaterales. La mediana de la volumetría de los tumores fue de 17 cm3 y la mediana de sangrado transoperatorio fue de 300 ml. En la prueba de Spearman se encontró una r = 0.426; p = 0.021.  Conclusiones: La medición de la volumetría por angiotomografía de los tumores del cuerpo carotídeo puede ser utilizada como predictor de sangrado durante la resección quirúrgica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Objective: To determine the association between tumor volumes (cm3) and bleeding during surgical resection of carotid body tumors.  Background: Carotid body tumors are paragangliomas located in the cervical region. Tumor incidence is approximately 1 in 30,000-100,000 people of the general population. Treatment gold standard is surgical resection; however, these tumors are associated with significant surgical bleeding.  Methods: Prospective study. Pre-surgical volume (cm3) analysis by computed tomographic (CT) angiography was done. Spearman test was used for correlation between volume, surgical bleeding and surgical operating time.  Results: Twenty-nine patients were studied from March 2017 to April 2019. Of the studied population, 86% were women, with a mean age of 55 years. 52% were right-sided tumors, 34% left-sided, and 14% bilateral. Volume median was 17 cm3 and the surgical bleeding median was 300 mL. Spearman test revealed an r = 0.426; p = 0.021.  Conclusions: CT angiography tumor volume can be used as a predictor of bleeding during surgical resection of carotid body tumors.]]></p></abstract>
