Lo que impulsa el avance de estas técnicas y del conocimiento asociado con ellas es principalmente la infertilidad. Debido a que esta condición se relaciona, aunque no de manera exclusiva, con trastornos orgánicos, es la biomedicina el principal campo del conocimiento que desarrolla los medios para enfrentarla en mujeres, hombres o parejas infértiles, aunque más recientemente se han incorporado otras áreas como la ingeniería, el diseño y los nuevos materiales. Este conocimiento, cuyo objetivo es principalmente enfrentar la incapacidad humana para reproducirse, tiene efectos colaterales no siempre indeseables que rebasan los propósitos para los que fueron creadas, produciendo un impacto potencial en las formas de asociación reproductiva en nuestra especie. En este texto se describen las características de los avances surgidos de la investigación científica y tecnológica en este siglo, en particular los trasplantes, los órganos artificiales y la producción de células sexuales en el laboratorio. Se examinan los efectos colaterales de estas técnicas y los debates en torno a ellas sobre el presente y futuro de la reproducción humana.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have had an incessant evolution since the second third of the twentieth century -beginning with artificial insemination in humans- and each development arises modern scenarios for human reproduction. Infertility is what drives the advancement of these techniques and the knowledge associated with them. Because this condition is related to organic disorders, biomedicine is the main field of knowledge that aims to solve it in women, men, or infertile couples, but more recently other areas such as engineering, design and new materials have been incorporated to the task. This assignment has the objective to confront the human inability to reproduce, sometimes it results in desirable side effects that have a potential impact on the ways of reproductive association in our species. This text describes the characteristics of the advances that have emerged from scientific and technological research in this century and takes a particular look at transplants, artificial organs and the artificial production of sex cells. It examines the side effects of these techniques and the debates surrounding them on the present and future of human reproduction.]]></p></abstract>
