Objetivo: identificar factores de riesgo asociados al esófago de Barrett en pacientes sometidos a su primera esofagogastroduodenoscopia en población mexicana.  Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal de asociación entre variables en el Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición &#8220;Salvador Zubirán&#8221;. La población de estudio fueron adultos de ambos sexos que acudieron a su primer estudio estudio de esofagogastroduodenoscopia en un periodo de 6 meses. Por medio de un formato previamente diseñado se recolectaron datos generales, datos sobre los factores de riesgo a ser evaluados y datos sobre el desenlace de interés (diagnóstico de esófago de Barrett). Una vez identificados los grupos con y sin esófago de Barrett posterior al estudio endoscópico y análisis patológico, se compararon las diferencias de la distribución de los factores de riesgo evaluados entre estos dos grupos, en el caso de las variables categóricas se compararon prevalencias y en el caso de las variables continuas se compararon medidas de tendencia central.  Resultados: en el periodo de estudio se evaluaron 164 pacientes, de los cuales, 15 presentaron esófago de Barrett. Los pacientes con esófago de Barrett presentaron una mediana de edad de 59 años, con ligera predominancia de hombres (53.3%) y todos fueron originarios de Latinoamérica. En el análisis individual, los factores de riesgo que presentaron asociación con el esófago de Barrett fueron la enfermedad por reflujo gastro-esofágico (ERGE), la presencia y la duración de los síntomas típicos de ERGE (pirosis y regurgitación), el antecedente del uso de fármacos antiácidos y la presencia de hernia hiatal. En el análisis multivariado aquellos factores de riesgo que conservaron una asociación positiva con el esófago de Barrett solo fueron la enfermedad por reflujo gastro-esofágico (p&lt;0.001) y la presencia de síntomas típicos de ERGE (p&lt;0.001).  Conclusiones: en la población mexicana los factores de riesgo para desarrollar esófago de Barrett son el antecedente de ERGE y la duración de los síntomas típicos como pirosis y regurgitación.]]></p></abstract>
