El desplazamiento y la mala unión son consecuencias indeseables del tratamiento. La reducción abierta y fijación interna con placas volares restauran la alineación normal del radio distal, sin embargo, existen reportes en la literatura de desplazamiento secundario de los fragmentos fijados con placas volares.  Objetivo:  detectar desplazamiento secundario en pacientes intervenidos de reducción abierta y fijación interna de radio distal con placa volar en los últimos cinco años en una institución privada de tercer nivel de atención.  Material y métodos:  un total de 54 pacientes cumplieron los criterios de inclusión; se realizaron mediciones radiográficas en proyecciones anteroposterior y lateral preoperatorias, postoperatorias inmediatas y postoperatorias a las seis semanas. Los criterios de desplazamiento significativo fueron: movimiento mayor de 5o en inclinación volar o radial o mayor de 1mm de varianza cubital o altura radial.  Resultados:  todos los pacientes presentaron algún grado de desplazamiento postoperatorio, sólo siete pacientes presentaron desplazamiento significativo. Un paciente rebasó los límites de aceptabilidad de reducción. El análisis estadístico con prueba &#967;² determinó que el único factor de riesgo para desplazamiento postoperatorio fue el sexo femenino (p &lt; 0.001). No se encontraron factores de riesgo en el análisis por regresión logística binaria.  Conclusiones:  en esta serie, el sexo femenino es un factor de riesgo para el desplazamiento postoperatorio. El desplazamiento probablemente no repercute clínicamente. Aumentar la cantidad de pacientes y darle seguimiento clínico a largo plazo puede darle más poder a nuestro estudio.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Introduction:  distal radius fractures are an important cause of disability in adults. Fracture displacement and malunion are known and common complications of treatment. Open reduction and fracture fixation with volar plates and screws restore the normal alignment of the radius, but there are few reports in the literature regarding secondary displacement of the fracture fragments.  Objective:  detect secondary displacement in patient receiving distal radius open reduction and internal fixation with volar plates in the last five years at a private third level hospital.  Material and methods:  a total of 54 patients satisfied our inclusion criteria. Radiographic measurements were taken on standard anteroposterior (AP) and lateral films, preoperative, immediate postoperative and six weeks postoperative. We considered significant displacement as follows: More than 5o of volar tilt or radial inclination change, and more than 1 mm displacement in ulnar variance or radial height.  Results:  all patients presented some degree of postoperative displacement, only seven patients were affected with displacement above our defined threshold. One patient displaced over acceptable reduction parameters. Statistical analysis with &#967;² test determined that female sex was the only significant risk factor for displacement in this study. Binary logistic regression analysis didn&#8217;t find any significant risk factors.  Conclusions:  in these series, female sex was the only risk factor for postoperative displacement. This displacement probable is not clinically significant. Long term follow-up and increasing the number of patients can give more power to our evidence.]]></p></abstract>
