<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2007-81102018000100051&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2007-81102018000100051&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2007-81102018000100051&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: Los avances en el estudio de la religión en Latinoaméríca se han visto restringidos por la persistencia de visiones excesivamente católico-céntricas que impiden entender adecuadamente la extensión y la relevancia de la diversidad religiosa, relegándola a un mero epifenómeno reciente y minoritario de nuestra realidad social. La real naturaleza del protagonismo del catolicismo en el continente podría ser mejor evaluada y comprendida -en sus distintas dimensiones- si dejáramos de aceptar acríticamente una serie de supuestos básicos que guían nuestros análisis y que intentaré replantear en este trabajo. Para ello, identificaré los rasgos mínimos de lo que considero un paradigma analítico dominante en el estudio de la religión desde las ciencias sociales (principalmente la sociología) y proveeré una visión alternativa, basada en presupuestos teóricos diferentes. Argumentaré que la sobre-dependencia en los postulados de algunos autores canónicos, la excesiva equiparación de &#8220;identidades&#8221; con &#8220;creencias&#8221; y la adhesión a visiones demasiado institucionalizadas de la religión, así como la escasa atención a las distintas modalidades de la regulación religiosa, brindan una visión exagerada de una &#8220;Latinoamérica católica&#8221;.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: The paper argues that the study of religion in Latin America has been hindered by the persistence of excessively Catholic-centered visions that prevent us from adequately understanding the extent and relevance of religious diversity, relegating it to a mere recent and residual epiphenomenon of our social reality. The true role of Catholicism in the continent would be better ascertained -in its different dimensions- if we stopped uncritically accepting a series of basic assumptions that guide our analyses and that I will try to rethink in this work. For this purpose, I will identify the minimum features of what I consider a dominant analytical paradigm in the social scientific study of religion and provide an alternative view, based on different theoretical assumptions. I argue that the overdependence on the assumptions of some canonical authors, the excessive equation of &#8220;identities&#8221; with &#8220;beliefs&#8221; and the favoring of overinstitutionalized visions of religion, as well as the scant attention paid to the different modes of religious regulation, provide an exaggerated view of a &#8220;Catholic Latin America&#8221;.]]></p></abstract>
