Objective:  To estimate the economic benefits of an improvement in the provision of basic sanitation services (water, sewage and wastewater treatment) in Puno, Peru.  Materials and methods:  The economic benefits were estimated from data obtained in a survey of 392 heads of family. The econometric estimates were made through a choice experiment with multinomial logit and mixed logit models.  Results and discussion:  An aggregate marginal willingness to pay of 9.95 PEN (3.32 USD) per month per dwelling was estimated; if the total number of favored households is considered, this amount represents a measure of economic benefit. The wastewater treatment attribute is more valued than the water and sewage provision attributes. With respect to the models used, the mixed logit-dummy codes model presented greater theoretical consistency of the results.  Conclusion: The choice of options for improving basic sanitation services is strongly conditioned by the educational level and monthly income of the users. Any policy aimed at improving basic sanitation services in the city of Puno should focus on solving the issue of wastewater treatment.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  La gestión de servicios de saneamiento básico en Perú es considerada política pública de alta prioridad.  Objetivo:  Estimar los beneficios económicos por una mejora en la provisión de servicios de saneamiento básico (agua, alcantarillado y tratamiento de aguas) en Puno, Perú.  Materiales y métodos:  Los beneficios económicos se estimaron a partir de los datos obtenidos en una encuesta a 392 jefes de familia. Las estimaciones econométricas se hicieron mediante un experimento de elección con modelos logit multinomial y logit mixto.  Resultados y discusión:  Se estimó una disposición a pagar marginal agregada de 9.95 PEN (3.32 USD) mensuales por vivienda; si se considera el total de hogares favorecidos, dicha cantidad representa una medida de beneficio económico. El atributo tratamiento de aguas residuales es más valorado que los atributos provisión de agua y alcantarillado. Con respecto a los modelos utilizados, el modelo logit mixto-dummy codes presentó mayor consistencia teórica de los resultados.  Conclusión: La elección de alternativas de mejora en los servicios de saneamiento básico está fuertemente condicionada por el nivel educativo y el ingreso monetario mensual de los usuarios. Cualquier política orientada a mejorar los servicios de saneamiento básico en la ciudad de Puno debe enfocarse en la solución del tema de tratamiento de aguas residuales.]]></p></abstract>
