They gather a great part of the biodiversity and are responsible for 30 % of the total surface runoff in Mexico. However, southeastern Mexico is recognized to present a high degree of socioeconomic vulnerability and climatic risk. Thus, since climatic data in tropical zones are scarce for climate knowledge and understanding, it is essential to analyze changes in precipitation patterns as a critical variable of climate. The present study analyzed the behavior of precipitation patterns using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for the period from 1960 to 2016 in the Grijalva and Usumacinta basins. Wet events were confirmed to occur during negative phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), whereas dry events occurred during their positive phases, respectively. In addition, the basins have been subjected to different environmental degradation processes, observed to a greater or lesser extent in each of the basins and parts of the countries involved. Thereby, climate change did not represent the only pressure on the natural resources of the area, since intense processes of degradation of vegetation cover and deforestation, among others, have been observed, and this pressure can be exacerbated by the effects of climate change.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Las cuencas Usumacinta y Grijalva se caracterizan por su alta riqueza hídrica y natural, no solo reúnen gran parte de la biodiversidad, sino que también son responsables del 30 % del escurrimiento superficial total del país. No obstante, se reconoce al sureste mexicano por su alto grado de vulnerabilidad socioeconómica y riesgo climático. En tal sentido, si bien en las zonas tropicales los datos climáticos son escasos, para el conocimiento y comprensión del clima, es fundamental analizar los cambios de los patrones de precipitaciones como una variable crítica del clima. El presente estudio analiza el comportamiento de los patrones de precipitaciones mediante el uso del Índice Estandarizado de Precipitación (SPI) para el periodo de 1960 a 2016 en las cuencas de Grijalva y Usumacinta. Se confirma que eventos húmedos ocurren en las fases negativas de la Oscilación Decadal del Pacifico (PDO) y de El Niño-Oscilación del Sur (ENSO), mientras que los eventos secos ocurren en fases positivas, respectivamente. Adicionalmente, las cuencas han estado sometidas a distintos procesos de degradación ambiental, observados en mayor o menor medida en cada una de las cuencas y porciones de los países involucrados. Así, el cambio climático no representa la única presión sobre los recursos naturales de la zona, puesto que se han observado intensos procesos de degradación de la cobertura vegetal y de deforestación, entre otros, y esa presión puede verse exacerbada por los efectos del cambio climático.]]></p></abstract>
