<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2007-33642016000100039&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2007-33642016000100039&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2007-33642016000100039&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: En la región de Calakmul en el sur de México, las aguadas (cuerpos de agua formados por la precipitación) son de gran importancia para la conservación de muchas especies que se encuentran en peligro de extinción, como el tapir centroamericano (Tapirus bairdii). Estos reservorios constituyen la única fuente de agua para la fauna silvestre durante la estación seca. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron: estimar la abundancia relativa del tapir y la intensidad de uso de las aguadas por Tapirus bairdii en en dos sitios contrastantes en cuanto a su disponibilidad de agua, la Reserva de la Biosfera Calakmul (RBC) y el Ejido Nuevo Becal (NB). Al ser un sitio protegido se espera que en la RBC exista una mayor abundancia relativa (AR) de tapires y que el uso de las aguadas sea mayor en la RBC que en el ejido NB. Durante 2014 se monitorearon nueve aguadas en NB y nueve en la RBC. Además, en la RBC se monitorearon seis aguadas con foto-trampeo desde diciembre 2012 y todo el 2013. La AR se calculó como el número de registros fotográficos independientes dividido por el esfuerzo de muestreo por 1,000 trampas/noche. Para el análisis del uso de aguadas se tomó en cuenta la latencia (tiempo que tardan los tapires en regresar a la aguada) y la frecuencia de visitas al mes. Comparamos el uso de aguadas entre temporadas y entre sitios La abundancia relativa (AR) del tapir en el año 2014 fue de 37.0 y 6.2 registros / 1,000 trampas-noche (esfuerzo de muestreo: 2,268 días en cada sitio de estudio) en NB y RBC, respectivamente. Las aguadas en NB fueron significativamente más visitadas que las de la RBC (P &lt; 0.05). La latencia fue de 9.6 y 10.8 días en época seca, y de 39.0 y 38.5 días en época de lluvia, en el ejido NB y en la RBC, respectivamente. Las aguadas fueron visitadas con mayor frecuencia en la época seca que en lluvias en ambos sitios. El hecho de encontrar mayor abundancia de tapires en el sitio donde existe perturbación humana, pero mayor abundancia de agua, señala que las aguadas son el factor fundamental que determina la presencia y abundancia de tapires para la región de Calakmul y el mantenimiento de poblaciones de tapires. Además, los índices de AR altos encontrados pudieran ser un indicio de que las actividades antropogénicas cotidianas (pero donde no existe presión significativa de caza para el tapir, como ocurre en el ejido NB), no están repercutiendo en las poblaciones de tapires. Se identifica al ejido NB como un sitio prioritario para la conservación del tapir centroamericano en México.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Water holes formed by precipitation in Calakmul region southern Mexico are of high importance for the conservation of many endangered species, such is the case of the Central American Tapir (Tapirus bairdii). These water holes locally named "aguadas" are the only source of water for wildlife in the dry season. The purpose of this study was to estimate the relative abundance and the use of these "aguadas" by Tapirus bairdii in two sites with different conditions: the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (RBC) a protected area, and the ejido Nuevo Becal (NB) a perturbed site where hunting and other non-timber resources extraction take place. It is expected that in RBC the relative abundance of tapirs and the use of the water holes are higher than in NB. Camera traps were set in nine water holes in NB and nine in RBC in 2014. In addition, in RBC six water holes were monitored since December 2012 until 2013. The relative abundance was calculated as the number of independent photographs divided by the sampling effort per 1,000 traps / night. For the use of water holes analysis, the variables evaluated were: latency (the lapse of time for the tapirs to return to a water hole) and the visit frequency per month. We compare the use of the water holes between seasons and between sites. Relative abundance of tapirs in 2014 was of 37.0 and 6.2 registers/1,000 camera-traps in NB and RBC, respectively (sampling effort: 2,268 days per site). The water holes in NB were significantly more visited than the ones in the RBC (P &lt; 0.05). The latency time was of 9.6 days in NB, and 10.8 days in RBC during the dry season, and 39.0 days in NB and 38.5 days in RBC during the wet season. The water holes were visited 1.8 times in NB and 0.3 times in RBC per month in the dry season, and 0.37 times in NB and 0.16 times in RBC in the rainy season. The fact of finding a higher abundance of tapirs in a place where antropogenic perturbation exists and with a higher abundance of water, indicated that water bodies are one of the most important attribute for the conservation of tapirs' population in the region of Calakmul. Moreover, the high index of relative abundance found in an area where human perturbation exists, means that human activities in places where tapir is not hunted, does not have a significant detrimental effect in the tapir´s populations. Therefore, the ejido NB is highlighted as a priority area for the conservation of the Centroamerican tapir in Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
