Aleatoriamente, se seleccionaron seis municipios de la región nor-poniente del estado de Tlaxcala. Se emplearon cartas geográficas sobre el uso del suelo, cuerpos de agua y tipos de vegetación. Se colectó información de tipo social, técnica y económica relacionada con 228 familias campesinas que crían ovinos previa selección al azar. Los datos fueron analizados con el análisis de varianza convencional y el análisis discriminante canónico. Se detectó diferencia entre municipios (P<0.05) para la mayoría de variables sociales, productivas y económicas. Las variables discriminantes entre municipios fueron la carga animal, los ingresos netos anuales, el tamaño de rebaño y los ingresos anuales por ventas. Se identificaron dos territorios que se clasificaron como ovinos-cereales y producción de ovinos con uso de recursos múltiples. En el primero, la cría de ovinos es una actividad alternativa a la agricultura para el 50 % de las familias campesinas que practican agricultura de temporal. En el segundo, la cría de ovinos es una opción productiva (29.2 %) dependiente de áreas para pastoreo con objetivos productivos claros, como venta de ovinos para pie de cría (3.5 %). Las diferencias en el uso de recursos y la orientación productiva de los sistemas de producción de ovinos justificaron formar dos territorios, por lo que se sugiere diseñar dos estrategias de desarrollo que mejoren el ingreso y bienestar de las familias campesinas.]]></p></abstract>

Six municipalities in Northwest Tlaxcala were chosen at random. Maps detailing soil use, bodies of water and vegetation were used. Social, production and economic data referred to 238 sheep raising smallholder families chosen at random were gathered. Data were analyzed by conventional variance and canonical discriminant analysis. Differences between municipalities were found (P<0.05) for most social, economic and production variables. Discriminate variables between municipalities were sheep stocking rate, net annual income, flock size and gross annual income (sales). Two territories, classified as sheep-crop and sheep rasing with multiple resources, were identified. In the first territory, sheep raising is an alternative activity for 50 % of families who grow rainfed crops, and in the second territory, sheep raising is an option (29.2 %), relaying on grazing areas, with definite production aims, and selling sheep breeding stock (3.5 %). Differences in resource use and production goals of sheep raising systems justified the formation of two territories. It is suggested to build up two sheep production strategies for improving both income and wellbeing of smallholder families.]]></p></abstract>

It is suggested to build up two sheep production strategies for improving both income and wellbeing of smallholder families.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Key words:</b>  Sheep, Production systems, Income, Municipalities, Multivariate analysis.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>INTRODUCCI&Oacute;N</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La producci&oacute;n de ovinos es una actividad com&uacute;n en muchas comunidades rurales del mundo<sup>(1,2,3)</sup>, complementa los ingresos del productor<sup>(4,5,6)</sup>, y transforma los subproductos agr&iacute;colas y alimentos fibrosos en un producto animal de alto valor econ&oacute;mico y biol&oacute;gico para el hombre. Esta actividad com&uacute;nmente se asocia al cultivo de cereales en las regiones de clima templado<sup>(7,8)</sup>, recursos econ&oacute;micos y medios de producci&oacute;n<sup>(9,10,11)</sup>. A la asociaci&oacute;n agricultura&#150;ovinos generalmente se le llama sistema de producci&oacute;n mixto<sup>(12,13)</sup>, sistema cultivo&#150;ganado<sup>(14,15)</sup> o sistema agropastoril<sup>(16,17)</sup>; su funci&oacute;n es diversificar las actividades productivas de la agricultura de temporal<sup>(18,19)</sup>. El nivel de producci&oacute;n de estos sistemas mixtos depende de la fertilidad y disponibilidad de las tierras agr&iacute;colas<sup>(20)</sup>, de rastrojeras y tierras para pastoreo<sup>(21,22,23)</sup>, del acceso a las &aacute;reas de pastoreo<sup>(24,25)</sup>, de la cantidad de mano de obra familiar <sup>(26,27)</sup> y de la venta de animales<sup>(28,29,30)</sup>.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En algunos pa&iacute;ses los reba&ntilde;os son mayores de 500 ovinos para poder acceder al mercado local y regional<sup>(1,31,32)</sup>, en otros pa&iacute;ses los reba&ntilde;os son peque&ntilde;os y representan una forma de disponer dinero en efectivo para las familias campesinas<sup>(2)</sup>.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los sistemas de producci&oacute;n de ovinos se han analizado con base a la forma de alimentar y manejar a los reba&ntilde;os<sup>(7,33)</sup> o con base al territorio<sup>(34,35,36)</sup>. En el primer caso, resultan clasificaciones seg&uacute;n la escala de producci&oacute;n y la organizaci&oacute;n del proceso productivo<sup>(37,42)</sup>. En los estudios con base al territorio se considera la diversidad de los sistemas de producci&oacute;n, el manejo y la estructura espacial de las explotaciones dentro de una regi&oacute;n<sup>(43)</sup>. Al complementar los estudios anteriores con datos de informaci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica y las t&eacute;cnicas de inventario de tierras ha permitido hacer una clasificaci&oacute;n territorial m&aacute;s completa<sup>(44,45)</sup>. Para Thenail y Baudry<sup>(46)</sup>, la conexi&oacute;n de las actividades agropecuarias y el ambiente se representa con el arreglo espacial de las parcelas y el tipo de uso de la tierra, revelando mejor la estructura del paisaje y a su din&aacute;mica ecol&oacute;gica. El an&aacute;lisis del uso de la tierra en combinaci&oacute;n con el paisaje<sup>(36)</sup>, requiere informaci&oacute;n socioecon&oacute;mica complementaria para hacer una buena evaluaci&oacute;n de los posibles cambios en el uso de la tierra<sup>(45)</sup>.</font></p> 	    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En la regi&oacute;n Centro de M&eacute;xico, donde se ubica el estado de Tlaxcala, se concentra el 80 % de la poblaci&oacute;n ovina<sup>(47)</sup>. Para el a&ntilde;o 2004 se registraron 152,789 ovinos<sup>(48)</sup> y la parte nor&#150;poniente del estado registr&oacute; el 77 % de la poblaci&oacute;n ovina. El sistema de producci&oacute;n dominante en la regi&oacute;n es de tipo extensivo y dependiente del uso de vegetaci&oacute;n de naturaleza biol&oacute;gica diversa<sup>(49)</sup>. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron analizar e integrar la informaci&oacute;n de las explotaciones ovinas con la del uso de la tierra, mediante an&aacute;lisis estad&iacute;sticos multivariados y as&iacute; clasificar los sistemas ovinos en territorios para la regi&oacute;n nor&#150;poniente del estado de Tlaxcala.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>MATERIALES Y M&Eacute;TODOS</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>&Aacute;rea de estudio</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El estudio se realiz&oacute; en seis municipios de la regi&oacute;n nor&#150;poniente del estado de Tlaxcala, ubicada en el Distrito de Desarrollo Rural (DDR) 163, Calpulalpan. La regi&oacute;n se localiza a 19&deg;22' y 19&deg;45' N y 97&deg;52' y 98&deg;43' O, a 2,650 msnm y 180,720 ha. El clima del lugar es C(w<sub>1</sub>)(w), templado sub&#150;h&uacute;medo con lluvias de verano al oto&ntilde;o y un periodo de sequ&iacute;a bien definido (noviembre a mayo), con temperatura media anual de 15 &deg;C y precipitaci&oacute;n pluvial promedio anual de 400 mm. Los suelos m&aacute;s comunes son, seg&uacute;n el INEGI<sup>(48)</sup>, Feozem h&aacute;plico (26 %), Cambisol e&uacute;trico (21 %), Litosol (17 %), Regosol e&uacute;trico (15 %), Fluvisol e&uacute;trico (13 %) y otros (8 %). Ambos factores, el clima y el tipo de suelo, favorecen el cultivo de ma&iacute;z, cebada, trigo y avena, as&iacute; como la cr&iacute;a de ovinos.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>Caracterizaci&oacute;n de las explotaciones ovinas en base al territorio</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se seleccionaron aleatoriamente seis municipios (Calpulalpan, Nanacamilpa de Mariano Arista, Benito Ju&aacute;rez, Hueyotlipan, Sanctorum y Domingo Arenas) de los once del Distrito de Desarrollo Rural 163 y se calcul&oacute; un tama&ntilde;o de muestra por muestreo estratificado<sup>(50)</sup> mediante la siguiente f&oacute;rmula:</font></p> 	    <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5e1.jpg"></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En donde: Li fueron los municipios o estratos, wi el peso para cada estrato (0.091), N<sub>i</sub> el total de productores por municipio, N el total de productores para los seis municipios, y <i>pq </i>la varianza (0.25) para una pregunta con respuesta dicot&oacute;mica ( <i>p=si</i> y q=no) con igual probabilidad (0.5), <img src="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5e2.jpg"> el l&iacute;mite para el error de la estimaci&oacute;n (B = 10 %). Se trabaj&oacute; con un valor de 1.96 para Z<sub>a/2</sub>. El tama&ntilde;o de muestra total calculado fue de 228 explotaciones de ovinos, con la siguiente distribuci&oacute;n: 29.8, 7.8, 5.7, 43.4, 6.5 y 6.5 %, para Calpulalpan, Nanacamilpa de Mariano Arista, Benito Ju&aacute;rez, Hueyotlipan, Sanctorum y Domingo Arenas, respectivamente.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se dise&ntilde;aron cuestionarios para colectar informaci&oacute;n por entrevista directa a productores de tipo social, t&eacute;cnico y econ&oacute;mico de las explotaciones ovinas. Las variables de tipo social fueron: n&uacute;mero de integrantes de la familia, edad del jefe de familia, actividad primaria principal y utilizaci&oacute;n de mano de obra<sup>(24)</sup>. En la parte t&eacute;cnica se registr&oacute; informaci&oacute;n del tipo de cultivo, superficie agr&iacute;cola, productos obtenidos, &eacute;poca de utilizaci&oacute;n de los productos y la relaci&oacute;n de cultivo&#150;ovinos; as&iacute; como el tipo gen&eacute;tico, el n&uacute;mero de animales, la estructura del reba&ntilde;o y las pr&aacute;cticas de manejo<sup>(39,51)</sup>. Finalmente, las variables econ&oacute;micas fueron: costos de producci&oacute;n, comercializaci&oacute;n e ingresos<sup>(19)</sup>.</font></p> 	    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Para la informaci&oacute;n espacial del uso de la tierra<sup>(44,45,46)</sup>, se utilizaron las cartas geogr&aacute;ficas de los municipios del INEGI<sup>(48)</sup> usando el programa Arc View versi&oacute;n 3.3, con la cual se elabor&oacute; un mapa sobreponiendo los datos de uso del suelo, cuerpos de agua, tipo de vegetaci&oacute;n, tipo de suelo y la informaci&oacute;n socioecon&oacute;mica registrada en los cuestionarios<sup>(44,45)</sup>.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>An&aacute;lisis estad&iacute;stico</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los datos se analizaron con el paquete estad&iacute;stico SAS para Windows<sup>(52)</sup> por el procedimiento GLM de SAS y m&eacute;todos de an&aacute;lisis multivariado. El an&aacute;lisis de las variables sociales y productivas de las explotaciones para cada municipio se realiz&oacute; con el siguiente modelo estad&iacute;stico: Y<sub>ij</sub> = <i>&#956;</i> + M<sub>i</sub> + E<sub>ij</sub>; donde: Y<sub>ij</sub>, fueron las variables de respuesta de tipo social, producci&oacute;n agr&iacute;cola y de producci&oacute;n ovina; <i>&#956;</i>, fue la media general; M<sub>i</sub> , fue el efecto de municipio y Ey el error experimental. Para la comparaci&oacute;n de medias entre municipios se utiliz&oacute; la prueba de Tukey ajustada.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Posterior al an&aacute;lisis de varianza convencional entre municipios, se procedi&oacute; a realizar un an&aacute;lisis discriminante con los datos de las explotaciones con el procedimiento CANDISC del SAS como lo describen Khattree y Dayanand<sup>(53)</sup> y Somda <i>et al</i><sup>(11)</sup>. Con este an&aacute;lisis se estimaron funciones lineales con las variables originales, que ayudaron a interpretar la asignaci&oacute;n de cada explotaci&oacute;n a un municipio. La interpretaci&oacute;n de las funciones can&oacute;nicas lineales se hizo en base a la suma de los coeficientes del conjunto de variables de tipo social, agr&iacute;colas, del reba&ntilde;o y econ&oacute;micas. Para verificar si las explotaciones de ovinos permanec&iacute;an en el mismo municipio o se reubicaban en otros, se estimaron las probabilidades de clasificaci&oacute;n por validaci&oacute;n cruzada con el procedimiento DISCRIM del SAS<sup>(54)</sup>. Finalmente, sobre el mapa elaborado se delimitaron a los municipios de cada agrupaci&oacute;n de explotaciones ovinas identificados con el an&aacute;lisis de clasificaci&oacute;n y se analiz&oacute; la relaci&oacute;n existente con la disponibilidad de tierras para el pastoreo, ya fueran agr&iacute;colas o de vegetaci&oacute;n natural<sup>(55)</sup>, con el prop&oacute;sito de tener una zonificaci&oacute;n de los sistemas de producci&oacute;n.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La caracterizaci&oacute;n de los sistemas de producci&oacute;n de ovinos se describieron usando los resultados de un segundo an&aacute;lisis de varianza GLM del SAS<sup>(52)</sup>, cuya variable clasificatoria fueron las agrupaciones identificadas con el an&aacute;lisis discriminante y la comparaci&oacute;n de medias con la prueba de Tukey ajustada.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>RESULTADOS Y DISCUSI&Oacute;N</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>Caracterizaci&oacute;n de la producci&oacute;n ovina</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En 85.5% de los productores entrevistados consideraron a la cr&iacute;a de ovinos como una actividad productiva secundaria y muy pocos como actividad primaria (10.9 %) y terciaria (3.5 %). Los propietarios de las explotaciones ovinas tuvieron una edad promedio de 48.9 &plusmn; 14.1 a&ntilde;os, similar a los productores de ovinos del estado de Veracruz<sup>(56)</sup>, y una experiencia en la cr&iacute;a de ovinos de 14.9 &plusmn; 10.3 a&ntilde;os (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05, <a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c1.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 1</a>), mayor a la reportada en otros estudios<sup>(57)</sup>; ambos par&aacute;metros fueron diferentes entre municipios (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El tama&ntilde;o promedio de la familia fue de 4.9 &plusmn; 2.1 integrantes con un aporte de mano de obra para el cuidado de los reba&ntilde;os de 1.9 &plusmn; 1.0 unidades de trabajo hombre (UTH), sin diferencia entre municipios (<i>P</i>&gt;0.05); una situaci&oacute;n muy similar ocurre en sistemas pastoriles de baja escala<sup>(58)</sup>. Se observ&oacute; una correlaci&oacute;n significativa (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05) entre el tama&ntilde;o de la familia y las UTH (r = 0.25), que se interpreta como una dependencia de la ovinocultura con la mano de obra familiar, particularmente en los municipios de Calpulalpan, Nanacamilpa y Sanctorum (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05, <a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c1.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 1</a>), por la necesidad de pastorear y conducir los reba&ntilde;os a los sitios de pastoreo.</font></p> 	    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El tama&ntilde;o promedio de la parcela agr&iacute;cola asociada a la cr&iacute;a de ovinos fue de 6.3 &plusmn; 5.9 ha, con una amplia variaci&oacute;n entre productores (0.5 a 35 ha) y municipios (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05, 3 a 6 ha); similar a otras regiones donde el sistema agricultura&#150;ovinos es com&uacute;n<sup>(8,58)</sup>, aunque no parece ser una situaci&oacute;n universal<sup>(59)</sup>. Los cultivos principales fueron ma&iacute;z (44.7 %) y cebada (30.3 %) y los cultivos secundarios el trigo (17.1 %) y la avena (7.1 %).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El tama&ntilde;o promedio de los reba&ntilde;os fue de 48.6 &plusmn; 39.3 ovinos con diferencias entre municipios (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05); los reba&ntilde;os de mayor tama&ntilde;o (&gt; 100 ovinos) se localizaron en Calpulalpan y Nanacamilpa (<a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c1.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 1</a>), por tener acceso a &aacute;reas boscosas con potencial para el pastoreo (70.3 %). La disponibilidad de &aacute;reas para el pastoreo influy&oacute; sobre el tama&ntilde;o del reba&ntilde;o de ovinos, pero no el tama&ntilde;o de la parcela agr&iacute;cola, como previamente lo reportaron Caballero <i>et al</i><sup>(8)</sup> y Lasseur<sup>(38)</sup>. El acceso a tierras con potencial para el pastoreo determin&oacute; que el 29.7 % de los productores tuvieran la posibilidad de invertir en un bien de capital adicional a la superficie agr&iacute;cola, para generar flujo de capital con la venta de corderos para engorda y ovinos adultos.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El tipo de recursos alimenticios usados vari&oacute; en el a&ntilde;o: de octubre a marzo (oto&ntilde;o e invierno) fue com&uacute;n el pastoreo en rastrojeras despu&eacute;s de la cosecha del grano (97.3 %), y de abril a septiembre (primavera&#150;verano) fue com&uacute;n el pastoreo a orillas de caminos, bordos de parcelas agr&iacute;colas, zonas de bosques y &aacute;reas de agostadero. Durante el pastoreo los reba&ntilde;os fueron supervisados y conducidos por una persona adulta (44.4 &plusmn; 17.2 a&ntilde;os) por rutas de 2.8 &plusmn; 1.3 km de la comunidad a las &aacute;reas de pastoreo, sin diferencias entre municipios (<i>P</i>&gt;0.05, <a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c1.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 1</a>). La distancia recorrida por los reba&ntilde;os fue menor a otros sistemas de producci&oacute;n de ovinos similares (3 a 5 km)<sup>(13,27)</sup>. El tiempo de pastoreo fue de 5.8 &plusmn; 1.7 h/d&iacute;a, con poca variaci&oacute;n entre municipios (<i>P</i>&lt;0.05), revelando una alta inversi&oacute;n en tiempo para el pastoreo de reba&ntilde;os como una estrategia para reducir costos de alimentaci&oacute;n<sup>(60)</sup>.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los productores recurren a la renta de rastrojeras y a la compra de rastrojo de ma&iacute;z para complementar el pastoreo, lo cual es una estrategia com&uacute;n en otras regiones del mundo para alimentar a los ovinos en la &eacute;poca de secas<sup>(18,21)</sup>. Todos los productores complementaron el pastoreo con 200 a 800 g de rastrojo de ma&iacute;z/d&iacute;a/oveja, aunque algunos adicionalmente proporcionaron de 75 a 300 g de grano de ma&iacute;z/d&iacute;a/oveja (40 %) o grano de cebada (44.8 %) en primavera&#150;verano. El uso de una alimentaci&oacute;n con granos de cereales, rastrojos de ma&iacute;z y paja de cebada explica la existencia del sistema agricultura&#150;ovinos en la regi&oacute;n, como en otros lugares<sup>(13,38,61)</sup>. Menos de la mitad de los productores sembraron avena para forraje (42 %), quiz&aacute;s para no reducir la superficie agr&iacute;cola dedicada a la producci&oacute;n de grano para consumo humano.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En los reba&ntilde;os fue com&uacute;n la incidencia de enfermedades respiratorias en el periodo de noviembre a marzo (68.16 %) y de diarreas en el periodo de marzo a junio (31.84 %). La tasa de mortalidad de corderos del nacimiento al destete (9.84 %) y post&#150;destete (5.4 %) es considerada alta comparada con sistemas de producci&oacute;n de ovinos especializados<sup>(62)</sup>, y fue una limitante para el crecimiento del reba&ntilde;o y la rentabilidad de la ovinocultura en esta regi&oacute;n.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los productores realizan el empadre continuo, como en cualquier sistema extensivo de ovinos<sup>(22,38,60)</sup>, originando partos todo el a&ntilde;o, pero con concentraciones en el invierno (43.9 %) y oto&ntilde;o (28.2 %). S&oacute;lo una menor proporci&oacute;n de hembras parieron en primavera (17.8 %) y verano (10 %), lo cual se explica por la mayor presencia de ovejas de lana, las cuales son m&aacute;s estacionales o posiblemente por la diferencia en la disponibilidad y calidad de alimento durante el a&ntilde;o(<sup>18</sup>,<sup>21</sup>). Los criterios para seleccionar a las ovejas para cr&iacute;a fue la apariencia f&iacute;sica (56.7 %) y el tama&ntilde;o corporal (29.83 %).</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La venta de ovejas y carneros para pie de cr&iacute;a fue el mejor negocio, al generar 1.8 veces m&aacute;s ingreso econ&oacute;mico (P&lt;0.05) comparado con la producci&oacute;n de corderos para venta y la engorda, y 1.46 veces m&aacute;s ingreso econ&oacute;mico en relaci&oacute;n al cultivo de cereales (P&lt;0.05). Sin embargo, esta pr&aacute;ctica s&oacute;lo la realiza el 3.5% de los productores de la regi&oacute;n de estudio.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En general, las decisiones de car&aacute;cter t&eacute;cnico para mejorar el proceso de producci&oacute;n son simples y se basan en la experiencia pr&aacute;ctica de los productores. Las unidades de producci&oacute;n ovina son similares en aspectos sociales, t&eacute;cnicos y econ&oacute;micos como lo se&ntilde;al&oacute; Devendra<sup>(15)</sup>; y usan a la parcela agr&iacute;cola y el reba&ntilde;o de ovinos como principales proveedores de ingreso para las familias campesinas<sup>(8)</sup>. El nivel de escolaridad puede determinar el grado de comprensi&oacute;n del proceso de producci&oacute;n ovina<sup>(56)</sup> y puede ser el factor limitante en la adopci&oacute;n de tecnolog&iacute;a de producci&oacute;n. El nivel de producci&oacute;n del sistema agricultura&#150;ovino puede ser medido como el n&uacute;mero de cr&iacute;as nacidas y la tasa de sobrevivencia de las mismas hasta la venta<sup>(63,64)</sup>.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>Clasificaci&oacute;n de las explotaciones ovinas con base en el territorio</i></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Con el an&aacute;lisis discriminante can&oacute;nico se obtuvieron cinco funciones lineales significativas (<i>P</i> <u>&lt;</u> 0.01; CAN1 a CAN5). Las variables discriminantes de las explotaciones ovinas en los municipios estudiados fueron la carga animal de ovinos, los ingresos netos anuales, el tama&ntilde;o de reba&ntilde;o y los ingresos anuales por ventas (<a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c2.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 2</a>). Las funciones lineales revelan que las explotaciones de ovinos en los municipios de la regi&oacute;n nor&#150;poniente del estado de Tlaxcala, son diferentes en la estructura productiva y en los beneficios obtenidos (<a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c2.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 2</a>), como en sistemas de mayor escala de algunos pa&iacute;ses europeos<sup>(15,65,66)</sup>.</font></p> 	    ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Las cartas geogr&aacute;ficas revelan que en la regi&oacute;n predominan tierras agr&iacute;colas de temporal (91.8 %), y son menos comunes las tierras con bosques y pastizales (7.07 %) y agricultura de riego (0.9 %); no se observ&oacute; la distribuci&oacute;n espacial de las granjas como lo se&ntilde;alaron otros<sup>(41,43,46)</sup>. Existe coincidencia con Verburg <i>et al</i><sup>(45)</sup>, en el sentido de que s&oacute;lo con los datos de cobertura de la tierra no es posible analizar el uso de la tierra. La informaci&oacute;n geogr&aacute;fica y los datos de las explotaciones identifican a la producci&oacute;n de cereales y a la cr&iacute;a de ovinos como una funci&oacute;n mutuamente entrelazada, en donde el movimiento diario de los reba&ntilde;os a las tierras de pastoreo es el medio para abastecerse de forrajes.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El an&aacute;lisis de clasificaci&oacute;n de las explotaciones ovinas con base a los aspectos sociales, productivos y econ&oacute;micos las reubic&oacute; en dos territorios dominantes (<a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c3.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 3</a>): el grupo del municipio de Hueyotlipan (50 %) y de Calpulalpan (29.2 %). Una clasificaci&oacute;n de esta naturaleza origin&oacute; dos territorios (<a href="#f1">Figura 1</a>), con diferencias en la disponibilidad de recursos f&iacute;sicos y biol&oacute;gicos, particularmente en la cantidad y tipo de &aacute;reas para el pastoreo. En el <a href="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5c4.jpg" target="_blank">Cuadro 4</a> se presentan las caracter&iacute;sticas de los sistemas de producci&oacute;n identificados, como se describen a continuaci&oacute;n:</font></p> 	    <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f1"></a></font></p> 	    <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/rmcp/v2n1/a5f1.jpg"></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>a) Producci&oacute;n de ovinos&#150;cereales.</i> A este sistema de producci&oacute;n le corresponde el 50 % de las unidades de producci&oacute;n de ovinos del estudio y el territorio lo forman los municipios de Hueyotlipan, Benito Ju&aacute;rez, Sanctorum y Mu&ntilde;oz de Domingo Arenas (Figura 4). En el &aacute;rea de influencia del sistema predominan las tierras agr&iacute;colas de temporal (91.9 %), bosques y pastizales (5.8 %) y tierras de riego (2.2 %). El sistema ovinos&#150;cereales tiene unidades de producci&oacute;n de tama&ntilde;o medio (5.18 ha), con alta fragmentaci&oacute;n de la tierra, la cual es insuficiente para mantener un mayor tama&ntilde;o de reba&ntilde;o a 37.3 ovinos y el sistema agropastoril hace uso de la renta de tierras, como lo se&ntilde;al&oacute; Caballero<sup>(8)</sup>. La superficie de cereales cultivada representa el 9.25 % de la tierra utilizada en Espa&ntilde;a<sup>(67)</sup>. Por la utilizaci&oacute;n de la mano de obra (2.12 personas por a&ntilde;o) y los subproductos de los cultivos agr&iacute;colas, la producci&oacute;n de ovinos queda dentro de un negocio alternativo, y por requerir m&aacute;s tierra de la que posee la familia para alimentar a los animales se puede clasificar como una actividad de subsistencia, como lo se&ntilde;alan Damianos y Skuras<sup>(68)</sup>. Los reba&ntilde;os de ovinos&#150;cereales utilizan los recursos de la explotaci&oacute;n para generar ingresos ($32,259.97 anuales/explotaci&oacute;n) por el autoempleo de la mano de obra familiar.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><i>b) Producci&oacute;n de ovinos con recursos m&uacute;ltiples.</i> Este sistema de producci&oacute;n agrupa al 29.2 % de las explotaciones estudiadas y se ubic&oacute; en el territorio formado por los municipios de Calpulalpan y Nanacamilpa. La cobertura de la tierra en el &aacute;rea de influencia de este sistema es de agricultura de temporal (91.7 %), bosques y pastizales (8 %) y otros usos (0.3 %). Los jefes de familia son m&aacute;s j&oacute;venes (46.2 a&ntilde;os) y tienen un mayor grado de escolaridad (8.5 a&ntilde;os, <i>P</i>&lt;0.05); estas variables son relacionadas con la obtenci&oacute;n de ingresos econ&oacute;micos altos para la familia campesina<sup>(56)</sup>. El tama&ntilde;o de los reba&ntilde;os es peque&ntilde;o (67.3 ovinos) en comparaci&oacute;n con fincas pastoriles en Francia con m&aacute;s de 600 ovinos<sup>(38)</sup>, aunque coinciden en el tipo de &aacute;reas de pastoreo utilizada y el uso de pastor. Por la cercan&iacute;a de las explotaciones del sistema de producci&oacute;n de ovinos con recursos m&uacute;ltiples a las &aacute;reas de monta&ntilde;a, el sistema de manejo utilizado es una extensi&oacute;n del modelo industrial, como lo se&ntilde;ala Damianos y Skuras<sup>(68)</sup>; esta integraci&oacute;n en el uso de recursos es com&uacute;n en los sistemas mixtos donde existe una menor separaci&oacute;n entre agricultura y uso de &aacute;reas de pastizales<sup>(8)</sup>. La cr&iacute;a de ovinos tiende a la especializaci&oacute;n a la venta de pie de cr&iacute;a (65 animales vendidos/explotaci&oacute;n), la producci&oacute;n se ve como negocio ($71,286.25 anuales/explotaci&oacute;n) y se recurre a la renta de tierras para tener un mayor tama&ntilde;o de reba&ntilde;o. El ingreso de las unidades de producci&oacute;n de ovinos del &aacute;rea de estudio representa el 14.2 % de los ingresos de una explotaci&oacute;n de ovinos en sistemas diversificados en B&eacute;lgica<sup>(69)</sup>. Para producci&oacute;n, uso intensivo de mano de obra y en una condici&oacute;n financieramente dif&iacute;cil, al proporcionar s&oacute;lo una parte del ingreso familiar, y son sistemas que utilizan m&aacute;s tierra de la que posee la familia.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>CONCLUSIONES E IMPLICACIONES</b></font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En la regi&oacute;n nor&#150;poniente del estado de Tlaxcala la cr&iacute;a de ovinos es una actividad econ&oacute;mica complementaria a la agricultura, sin necesidad de mano de obra especializada y una inversi&oacute;n alta en ovejas para cr&iacute;a. El nivel de productividad e ingreso de las unidades de producci&oacute;n ovina estuvo determinada por la parcela agr&iacute;cola, el tama&ntilde;o de reba&ntilde;o y cantidad de ovejas para cr&iacute;a. Antes de la formaci&oacute;n de territorios es necesario reagrupar las unidades de producci&oacute;n ovina en los municipios. Existen dos territorios con sistemas de producci&oacute;n ovina: ovinos&#150;cereales y ovinos con recursos m&uacute;ltiples, diferenciados en los tipos de tierras disponibles para el productor, trabajo invertido al cuidado de los reba&ntilde;os, el tama&ntilde;o de los reba&ntilde;os y el activo de capital que poseen. El dise&ntilde;o de las estrategias de asistencia t&eacute;cnica debe ser acorde a las necesidades de ambos sistemas de producci&oacute;n ovina.</font></p> 	    <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p> 	    ]]></body>
