La larga historia y magnitud de la migración entre México y los Estados Unidos han creado &#8220;una cultura de migración&#8221; en la República Mexicana, particularmente en las comunidades rurales, donde la migración es un rito de pasaje o una expectativa para la juventud (Kandel y Massey, 2002). Numerosas familias mexicanas han adoptado una estrategia teóricamente conceptualizada como &#8220;hogares partidos&#8221; (split households), que se refiere a las familias binacionales en donde la madre o el padre trabajan en los Estados Unidos durante parte o la totalidad del año, mientras que los otros miembros de la familia viven en México. Es importante conocer cómo este proceso ha contribuido a la formación de comunidades que podemos denominar transnacionales en las cuales los y las emigrantes están ligados social, económica y políticamente a sus lugares de origen (Rouse, 1988, 1991, 1992 y Glick Schiller, Basch y Blanc, 1995).]]></p></abstract>
