Este artículo presenta aportes en torno a los avances en la investigación del compostaje de biorresiduos en municipios menores de países en desarrollo, con base en resultados de seis años de estudios realizados por los autores. Se abordan: i) el análisis de la calidad fisicoquímica de los sustratos, ii) la evaluación de opciones para mejorar el proceso y la calidad del producto, iii) el desarrollo de herramientas para la planeación y operación de las instalaciones de compostaje. Estos avances han permitido reducir los tiempos de proceso, mejorar las condiciones para la higienización del material, cumplir con los estándares de calidad del producto, identificar pruebas para mejorar el control y monitoreo in situ de la estabilidad y madurez del producto y desarrollar herramientas para la selección de materiales de enmienda y de soporte. La reflexión ayuda a elucidar que la investigación, acompañada de proyectos a escala piloto, se constituye en una estrategia para posicionar el compostaje de biorresiduos como una opción adecuada de manejo de la fracción orgánica de los residuos sólidos municipales (RSM).]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Composting is one of the most used technologies for biowaste recycling. However, its adoption has been ineffective in developing countries; one of the causes being the limited research for implementation in these contexts. This paper presents a contribution around progress in research on biowaste composting in small municipalities from developing countries, based on results from six years of studies conducted by the authors. Three topics are addressed: i) analysis of the physicochemical quality of substrates; ii) assessment of alternatives for improving the process and product quality; and iii) development of tools for planning and operation of composting installations. This progress has allowed reducing processing times, improve the conditions for material sanitization, fulfil the standards of product quality, identify tests for improving in situ control and monitoring of product maturity and stability, and developing tools to select bulking and amendment materials. Research together with pilot-scale projects is a significant strategy for positioning biowaste composting as an appropriate alternative for managing the organic fraction of municipal solid waste.]]></p></abstract>
