</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
This study determines if the young people who apply for admission into high school select schools according to a certain pattern, and if variables influence the process. Four selection patterns were identified, according to the subsystem of schools; one group was formed for each pattern. The data were obtained from a questionnaire answered in 2012 by 150,404 young people; multinomial logistic regression was used for analysis. The variables were socioeconomic level, distance between the selected schools and the home, middle school average, and proportion of the requested schools that the young person could have entered based on the individual test results. This final variable was not significant in the group whose first choice was a school in a subsystem different from the second choice; the remaining variables were significant for all groups. Since individuals with different characteristics have different selection patterns, the possible indication is that certain disadvantaged groups may not have sufficient information to select schools; the suggestion is to design strategies to provide needed information.
</abstract>
