<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S1405-33222021000200005&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S1405-33222021000200005&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S1405-33222021000200005&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La plataforma continental del centro-norte de Venezuela está controlada estructuralmente por fallas activas transcurrentes dextrales, principalmente por la falla de San Sebastián (FSS) ésta con una extensión de unos 300 km aproximadamente, forma parte del límite sur de la interacción de las Placas Caribe y Suramérica, y tiene su trazado sumergido en casi su totalidad. Todo este contexto ha modelado la plataforma donde se pueden describir tres provincias fisiográficas principalmente, de oeste a este: la plataforma del Golfo Triste, la cuenca de Choroní y la plataforma de La Guaira. Las dos plataformas mencionadas son de tipo erosivo; la cuenca de Choroní es una depresión profunda, que es incisa por cañones submarinos que siguen un trazo aparente de deformaciones secundarias de FSS. Nuestra investigación está enfocada en la cobertura sedimentaria correspondiente al Pleistoceno tardío-Holoceno a través de perfiles sísmicos marinos de alta resolución adquiridos gracias a la cooperación de varias instituciones (FUNVISIS, con las Universidades de Grenoble-Alpes (UGA) Francia, Gante Bélgica y UDO Venezuela). A través del análisis de estos perfiles se pudo afinar y mapear el trazado de la falla de San Sebastián desde Cabo Codera al este (~66°O). hasta Golfo Triste (~68° O), de la falla de La Tortuga (~65.5° O) e identificar fallas y deformaciones secundarias. En cuanto a la Sismoestratigrafía, se han identificado 6 unidades regionales y 2 discordancias erosivas fundamentales, correspondientes con el MIS 2 (último máximo glacial ~20 ka) y el MIS 6 (~130 ka) en toda el área de estudio. Sobre estas discordancias, en la plataforma de la Guaira se estimaron los valores de subsidencia obteniéndose ~1.2 mm.año-1. Se encontró que, en la plataforma de la Guaira, se nota la deformación de los sedimentos cortados directamente por la traza de la FSS. En contraste, en la cuenca de Choroní en el oeste, se observó una zona de deformación intensa, sin una traza clara definida como en la plataforma de la Guaira, con la presencia de dos o más posibles zonas de falla deformando los depósitos sedimentarios cuaternarios.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The continental shelf north of Central Venezuela is partially or completely structurally controlled by major right lateral strike slip active faults (e.g. San Sebastián fault), comprising three physiographic provinces, from west to east: The Golfo Triste Platform, the Choroní Basin and the La Guaira Platform. The two mentioned platforms are of erosional type while the Choroní basin is a deep depression, which is incised by submarine canyons. These canyons seem to be related to turbidity currents with greater flows during the Pleistocene wetter periods. Following several authors, these submarine canyons are partially or completely structurally controlled by major structures present in the north-central coastal range of Venezuela. Five major regional unconformities and/or seismostratigraphic limits have been identified. We propose to correlate the most recent to MIS 2 (Last Glacial Maximum ~ 20 ka) lowstand. The chronological significance of the deepest detected major uncomformity (strong erosion) is tentatively attributed to MIS 6 (~130 ka) lowstand. Based on the present-day position of the later one, we propose an estimation of ~1.2 mm.y-1 of the mean subsidence rate in the La Guaira Shelf, considering that the obtained value may locally represent a minor vertical component of the dominantly horizontal displacement along the San Sebastián Fault. The San Sebastián fault shows a linear deformation in the eastern profiles. In contrast to the west, we observe in some profiles an intense deformation zone.]]></p></abstract>
