Para verificarlo se seleccionaron dos flujos de lava del último ciclo eruptivo del volcán Citlaltépetl (Pico de Orizaba) localizados en el flanco suroeste del cono, denominados en este trabajo &#8220;A&#8221; y &#8220;B&#8221;, que han sido vinculados con erupciones de los siglos XVI y XVII, y a los que se les aplicaron dos métodos de datación: el isótopo cosmogénico terrestre 36Cl y la liquenometría. El isótopo cosmogénico 36Cl revela que el flujo de lava &#8220;A&#8221; tiene una edad de 3.03 ± 0.70 ka y la liquenometría arroja una edad mínima de ~1,130 años. Con respecto al flujo de lava &#8220;B&#8221;, el isótopo cosmogénico 36Cl indica que su edad es de 1.45 ± 0.35 ka mientras que la liquenometría proporciona una edad mínima de ~1,000 años. Las edades de exposición derivadas de ambos métodos indican que ambas lavas son significativamente más antiguas de lo que se pensaba y por tanto combinar la conservación íntegra de los rasgos geomorfológicos primarios, la posición estratigráfica y los registros históricos no es por sí solo suficiente para determinar sus edades. En general, la combinación del isótopo cosmogénico 36Cl y de la liquenometría, utilizados por primera vez en México para datar flujos de lava, representa un procedimiento sólido que, apoyado en los criterios geomorfológicos, estratigráficos y registros históricos, puede ser útil para completar la historia eruptiva de otros volcanes mexicanos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT In this study we tested whether young (Holocene) lava flows can be confidently dated based on the preservation of the primary geomorphological features, the stratigraphic position and historical records. To verify this hypothesis, we combined in situ-produced cosmogenic 36Cl exposure dating and lichenometry on two lava flows from the last eruptive cycle of Citlaltépetl (Pico de Orizaba), called Lava flow &#8220;A&#8221; and &#8220;B&#8221;, previously attributed to 16th and 17th century eruptions, respectively. On lava flow &#8220;A&#8221;, the measured in situ-produced 36Cl concentrations lead to a mean age of 3.03 ± 0.70 ka, while lichenometry yields a minimum age of ~1,130 years. Regarding lava flow &#8220;B&#8221;, the measured in situ-produced 36Cl concentrations lead to a mean age of 1.45 ± 0.35 ka, whereas lichenometry gives a minimum age of ~1,000 years. The exposure ages derived from these methods indicate that both lava flows are significantly older than previously thought and therefore the combination of the preservation of the primary geomorphological features, the stratigraphic position and the historical records is not enough to determine their ages. Overall, the combination of in situ-produced 36Cl cosmic ray exposure dating and lichenometry, used for the first time in Mexico and supported by geomorphological, stratigraphic and historical record criteria, has a considerable potential for dating purposes and it could be useful to refine the eruptive history of other Mexican volcanoes.]]></p></abstract>
