En el estado de Veracruz se tienen diferentes opiniones acerca de los taxones de Agave reportados para la entidad. Este hecho causa disparidad en la información disponible sobre la riqueza de especies de este género. Los objetivos de esta investigación fueron: identificar las especies de Agave presentes en Veracruz y zonas adyacentes; analizar la variabilidad morfológica y, determinar los caracteres morfológicos que permiten el reconocimiento de los taxones. Se llevó a cabo un análisis multivariado de 29 poblaciones de Agave y 57 caracteres morfológicos. Los procedimientos incluyeron un análisis de agrupamiento con el método de la media aritmética no ponderada y el coeficiente de distancia Euclideana. Se aplicó un análisis de componentes principales (ACP) a las 29 poblaciones y 30 caracteres cuantitativos. Los análisis permitieron reconocer 20 taxones de Agave que corresponden con 17 especies y tres categorías infraespecíficas. Las características más importantes que diferencian los taxones de acuerdo con el ACP son: longitud de la flor, longitud del canalículo de la espina terminal, longitud de anteras, longitud de las brácteas del escapo, longitud del tubo del perigonio, longitud del tépalo externo, longitud del filamento del estambre y amplitud del ovario. Los análisis multivariables soportan el reconocimiento de 17 especies de Agave s.s. en Veracruz y zonas adyacentes. Los altos porcentajes de variación de los caracteres florales considerados apoyan el empleo de las flores como atributos importantes para la clasificación y separación de las especies de Agave s.s.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The genus Agave includes species of economic and cultural importance for Mexico. In the state of Veracruz there are different opinions about the Agave taxa reported for the state. This fact causes disparity in the information available on the species richness of this genus. The objectives of this research were: to identify the species of Agave present in Veracruz and adjacent areas; to analyze morphological variability; and to determine the morphological characters that allow the recognition of taxa. A multivariate analysis of 29 Agave populations and 57 morphological characters was carried out. The procedures included a clustering analysis with the unweighted arithmetic mean method and the Euclidean distance coefficient. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the 29 populations and 30 quantitative characters. The analyses allowed the recognition of 20 Agave taxa corresponding to 17 species and three infraspecific categories. The most important characteristics that differentiate taxa according to PCA are: flower length, length of the canaliculus of the terminal spine, anther length, length of the bracts of the scape, length of the perigonium tube, length of the external tepal, length of the stamen filament, and ovary breadth. Multivariate analyses support the recognition of 17 species of Agave s.s. in Veracruz and adjacent areas. The high percentages of variation of the floral characters considered support the use of flowers as important attributes for the classification and separation of Agave s.s. species.]]></p></abstract>
