MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS:  Estudio retrospectivo y descriptivo de serie de casos atendidos en el Hospital de la Mujer de Culiacán, Sinaloa, entre el 1 de enero y el 31 de diciembre del 2023, en pacientes con diagnóstico de fístula vesicovaginal. Del análisis para variables cualitativas se obtuvieron frecuencias y de las variables cuantitativas medias y mediana, procesado en el programa Stata Intercooled versión 13.1 College Station Texas.  RESULTADOS: Se analizaron 4687 expedientes electrónicos de pacientes atendidas durante el periodo de estudio, de las que 2380 (50.77%) se atendieron mediante parto, 2188 por cesárea (46.68%) y 119 histerectomías (2.53%). De ese universo se identificaron 6 pacientes con diagnóstico de fístula vesicovaginal secundaria a un procedimiento ginecológico u obstétrico, con una frecuencia de 1.28 por cada 1000 intervenciones ginecológicas u obstétricas. La fistulectomía se practicó en un promedio de 79.5 ± 33.37 días y en todos los casos el diagnóstico se estableció por medio de la cistoscopia. El acceso quirúrgico más practicado fue el abdominal en 5 de las 6 pacientes, solo en una fue por vía vaginal. Una paciente requirió ser reintervenida debido a que continuaba con pérdidas de orina vía transvaginal.  CONCLUSIONES: La principal causa de la fístula vesicovaginal es la histerectomía por causas benignas. Para el tratamiento se prefiere el acceso por vía abdominal.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  OBJECTIVE: To determine the causes and treatment of vesicovaginal fistulas in patients treated at the Urogynecology Department of a tertiary care hospital.  METHODS AND MATERIALS:  This was a retrospective, descriptive study of cases of vesicovaginal fistula treated at the Women&amp;apos;s Hospital in Culiacán, Sinaloa, between January 1 and December 31, 2023. Qualitative variables were analyzed to yield frequencies, and quantitative variables were analyzed to yield means and medians. All analyses were performed using Stata Intercooled version 13.1 (College Station, TX).  RESULTS: A total of 4,687 electronic patient records from the study period were analyzed. Of these, 2,380 (50.77%) were treated via delivery, 2,188 (46.68%) via C-section, and 119 (2.53%) via hysterectomy. Six patients were diagnosed with vesicovaginal fistula secondary to a gynecological or obstetric procedure, with a frequency of 1.28 per 1,000 procedures. Fistulectomy was performed on average after 79.5 ± 33.37 days, and cystoscopy was used to establish the diagnosis in all cases. The most common surgical approach was abdominal (5 of 6 patients); only one was vaginal. Only one patient required reoperation due to continued transvaginal urine leakage.  CONCLUSIONS:  The main cause of vesicovaginal fistula is hysterectomy for benign reasons. Abdominal access is preferred for treatment.]]></p></abstract>
