En este estudio se realizó un análisis Costo-Beneficio de la calefacción distrital con base en la biomasa como alternativa para la reducción de emisiones de material particulado fino. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la calefacción distrital es una alternativa viable para el reemplazo de calefactores individuales a leña y genera beneficios ambientales que superan los costos de inversión y de operación. Dentro de estos beneficios, la reducción de la contaminación del aire generaría una disminución de 5.5 &#956;g/m3 en promedio anual de material particulado fino, lo que implica un provecho a la salud de la población de 64.7 Miles de dólares por tonelada. Sin embargo, los resultados demuestran que es necesario una inserción de la calefacción distrital en el 70 % de las viviendas para que sea competitivo frente a los actuales sistemas de calefacción.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Residential wood burning in low efficiency heaters is primarily responsible for the high concentrations of particulate matter observed in cities of south-central Chile. In this study, a cost-benefit analysis was performed for assessing biomass-based district heating as an alternative for reducing particulate matter emissions. The results show that district heating is a feasible alternative for the replacement of individual wood heaters, and generates environmental benefits that exceed the costs of investment and operation. The annual average of particulate matter levels would decrease by 5.5 &#956;g/m3, which implies a benefit of 64.7 thousand dollars per ton reduced. However, the results show that when 70 % of the homes are connected to district heating, this system becomes competitive with current alternatives of residential heating.]]></p></abstract>
