Para ello, se tomaron muestras de las aguas receptoras del efluente final de ambas industrias de celulosa en tres estaciones de muestreo en el río: la primera antes de la descarga (pre-impacto), la segunda en la zona de descarga del efluente (impacto) y la tercera después de la descarga (postimpacto). Los resultados no mostraron efectos tóxicos de las aguas receptoras de los efluentes en ambas industrias sobre C piger. En las aguas receptoras del efluente de la industria A, se observó una estimulación significativa del crecimiento de las larvas de C piger, en tanto que en las aguas receptoras de la industria B, no se observó un efecto sobre el crecimiento de las larvas. Por otro lado no se observó correlación entre el crecimiento y las concentraciones de halógenos orgánicos adsorbibles (HOA) y halógenos orgánicos extractables (HOE).]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The toxicity of the Biobío river waters affected by the discharges of effluents from two pulp mill, was evaluated through bioassays with Chironomus piger larvae. To achieve this, several samples from the receiving waters of effluents were taken in three different locations along the river. The first, before the discharge (pre-impact), the second, in an area where the effluents were discharged (impact), and the third, after the discharge (post-impact). No toxic effects were seen on C. pigerin the receiving waters from both industries. A significant growth stimulation for the C piger larvae was observed in the receiving waters from industry A, whereas in industry B, no effect was observed. In addition, we did not find any relation between growth and adsorbible organic halogens (AOX) and extractables organic halogens (EOX) concentrations.]]></p></abstract>
