<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The study of landscape and land-use transformations is essential to address environmental challenges such as desertification, loss of biodiversity, and global warming. In Mexico, annual deforestation rates have fluctuated between 1 % and 8 %, with alarming conversion of forests into agricultural and urban land, negatively affecting natural vegetation. Previous research has analyzed changes in land use at regional levels using various methodologies; however, no studies have evaluated the intensity of these changes at the national level. This work analyzed the intensity of land-use changes considering the rate of change, the permanence of use categories, and the transitions between covers, particularly forest areas. The research hypothesis is that the analytical method to assess intensity can identify areas vulnerable to change and reveal the dynamics of deforestation drivers. The results will provide valuable information for land-use planning, ecosystem restoration, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and are essential for effective natural resource management in Mexico. Materials and Methods. The study was carried out in three stages: land-use mapping acquisition and processing of land-use maps, analysis of the intensity of land-use changes (intensity, permanence, and transition), and landscape autocorrelation tests. Mapping and Data. Six official INEGI land-use series (2001-2018) at 1:250,000 scale were used, and vegetation was classified into 20 categories according to the UNCCD. Each land-use cover was converted to 1 km × 1 km raster format, giving a total of 1 959 248 pixels; those that could not be mapped were excluded. Intensity of Land-Use Change. The intensity analysis considers the extent and rate of change. Aldwaik and Pontius's mathematical approach was used to compare observed intensities with a uniform mean intensity. Six time intervals were analyzed: 2001-2005, 2005-2009, 2009-2013, 2013-2016, 2016-2018, and 2001-2018, producing transition matrices that allow evaluating changes in land use. The analysis was performed in R and ArcGIS®. Size and intensity of change. The size and intensity of annual change at each interval were calculated, determining whether the change was fast or slow. Category permanence. The variation in gains and losses between categories was evaluated, and changes were classified as active or inactive according to their intensity. Transition between categories: The transition between categories was analyzed to determine the size and intensity of changes between them, establishing whether a category tended to expand or contract. Landscape Autocorrelation Analysis. Quantitative analysis and cartographic visualization were combined to investigate landscape evolution over 20 years, using the univariate local Moran's I analysis to assess spatial autocorrelation. This information was used to construct a LISA map, which shows the concentration and differentiation of changes in the landscape at the local level. Results and Discussion. Significant deforestation and landscape transformation patterns were identified, highlighting that approximately 40 % of the country's surface area has experienced some type of land-use change. The results show that deforestation has been particularly pronounced in areas with increased urban expansion and agricultural activities. A 10 % loss of forest cover was observed, while shrublands and grasslands remained relatively stable, although these also showed a 4 % reduction. The areas of high change intensity are located primarily in southern Mexico, where urban development is more intense, in contrast to the northern region, where there is a lower intensity of change. The analysis also highlighted variability in land-use categories, with mainly "human settlements" showing significant increases. This suggests that socioeconomic dynamics and development policies have influenced landscape transformation. Conclusions. In this study, applying the Aldwaik and Pontius methodology to assess the intensity of land use change has allowed a deep understanding of land-use and vegetation cover dynamics in Mexico over six time intervals between 2001 and 2018. The loss of forest cover is significant, with a 10 % reduction, while other vegetation types have undergone minor changes. The need for continuous and systematic monitoring of land-use mapping at the national level to identify trends in deforestation, urbanization, and changes in vegetation cover is emphasized. This is crucial for informed decision-making in conservation policies and sustainable management of natural resources. In addition, it is suggested that future studies should consider verifying information in the field to improve the accuracy of analyses on the intensity of land-use change.]]></p></abstract>
