Típicamente se maneja de forma conservadora mediante estabilización neumática interna; sin embargo, esto se asocia con incremento de infecciones respiratorias asociadas a ventilación prolongada y estenosis traqueal. Una alternativa es la reconstrucción temprana mediante fijación quirúrgica de arcos costales, que disminuye los tiempos de ventilación y estancia intrahospitalaria. Presentamos el caso de un paciente masculino de la octava década de vida, quien se presentó con tórax inestable secundario a traumatismo torácico y que fue manejado exitosamente con fijación quirúrgica de arcos costales, lo que permitió un pronto destete de la ventilación mecánica, corta estancia hospitalaria, rápida recuperación y egreso hospitalario.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Chest trauma is a complex disease whose range of flail chest carries an increased mortality associated with other injuries. It is typically managed conservatively, with internal pneumatic stabilization; however, this is associated with prolonged ventilation and increased respiratory infections, in addition to tracheal stenosis. An alternative is an early surgical reconstruction by rib fracture fixation, which decreases the mechanical ventilation time and in-hospital stay. We report the case of a male patient of the 8th decade of life who presented with flail chest secondary to chest trauma and was successfully managed with surgical rib fixation, allowing early weaning from mechanical ventilation, shorter in-hospital stay, faster recovery and hospital discharge.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: O trauma torácico é uma patologia complexa, cujo tipo de tórax instável ou volet costal, leva a um aumento da mortalidade associada a outras lesões. Normalmente, o tratamiento é de forma conservadora, com a estabilização pneumática interna; No entanto, isso está associado com o aumento de infecções respiratórias associadas com a ventilação prolongada e estenose traqueal. Uma alternativa é a reconstrução cirúrgica precoce, mediante a fixação dos arcos costais, o que diminui os tempos de ventilação e permanência hospitalar. Relatamos o caso de um paciente do sexo masculino da 8ª década de vida, que apresentou tórax instável secundária a un traumatismo torácico; foi tratado com sucesso por meio de uma fixação cirúrgica dos arcos costais, permitindo o desmame precoce da ventilação mecânica, menor tempo de internação, recuperação mais rápida e alta hospitalar.]]></p></abstract>
