De esta manera, un tallo corto muestra un área xilemática menor que puede influir sobre el flujo de agua e hidratación de los tejidos y vida de florero (VF). Por lo anterior, el objetivo de este trabajo fue describir las características de los vasos de xilema y su relación con la capacidad de conducción de agua y la VF en tallos largos (50 cm), medianos (35 cm) y cortos (25 cm) de rosa cv. Polo. Se calcularon el índice de vulnerabilidad y la conductividad hidráulica relativa, además del flujo de agua en fracciones de tallo y unidad floral, y la VF. Al comparar los diámetros de vasos de xilema de los tallos más cortos con los medianos y largos se obtuvieron valores de 4.41, 12.4 y 12.51 &#956;m respectivamente; en el mismo orden, los índices de vulnerabilidad fueron de 0.14, 0.83 y 1.29 y la conductividad hidráulica relativa fue de 898, 25,269 y 19,628, respectivamente. En relación con las variables fisiológicas, los tallos de menor longitud también registraron un reducido flujo y consumo tanto en las fracciones de tallo como en las unidades florales. La VF en los tallos largos y medianos fue de 11.4 y 10.6 d comparado con 7.3 d obtenidos en los tallos de longitud corta. Se concluyó que los vasos de xilema de diámetro corto con una conductividad hidráulica reducida tienen una influencia negativa sobre la hidratación de los tejidos y la VF.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Flower stem length is a quality criterion in cut roses (Rosa hybrida L.). Cutoff sectional area and water absorption in long stems are larger than in short stems. Thus, a short stem has a small xylem area, which might restrain water flow and tissue hydration, and reduce life in a flower vase (VL). Therefore, this study describes xylem vessels characteristics and their relationship with water conductivity capacity, and how they influence VL in long (50 cm), medium (35 cm) and short (25 cm) stems of Polo rose. Vulnerability indexes, relative hydraulic conductivity, and water flow in stem fractions, floral unity and VL were calculated. Comparison between xylem diameter in short, medium and long stems showed values of 4.41, 12.4 and 12.51 &#956;m, respectively. In the same order, vulnerability indexes were 0.14, 0.83 and 1.29; while relative hydraulic conductivities were 898, 25,269 and 19,628, respectively. In regard to physiological traits, shorter stems also registered reduced flow and consumption in both stem fractions and floral units.
