Crabs of the species Callinectes arcuatus Ordway, 1863 were caught in Cuyutlán Lagoon, Colima, Mexico (19°0&#8242;38.48&#8243;N, 104°14&#8242;50.65&#8243;W). Among them, 1 specimen of Charybdis hellerii A. Milne-Edwards, 1867 was caught. This specimen was molecularly identified by the forensic information nucleotide sequencing (FINS) procedure using a fragment of the 16S rRNA gene (518 bp). The 16S rRNA sequence of C. hellerii (GenBank accession number PQ800082) showed 83% identity with the C. arcuatus sequences in the GenBank database and those obtained here (GenBank accession numbers PQ800080 and PQ800081). Reports by citizen scientists on iNaturalist have indicated the presence of C. hellerii in the waters of Colima since 2019. However, this is the first time that molecular markers confirm its presence on the Mexican Pacific coast. Further research is needed to understand the extent of C. hellerii propagation along the Mexican Pacific coast, as its presence since 2019 could indicate an established population in this area. The presence of this species is concerning, as it could affect the populations of other commercially important native crab species.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen. Se capturaron jaibas de la especie Callinectes arcuatus Ordway, 1863 en la Laguna de Cuyutlán, Colima, México (19°0&#8242;38.48&#8243;N, 104°14&#8242;50.65&#8243;O). Entre ellas, se obtuvo un ejemplar de Charybdis hellerii A. Milne-Edwards, 1867, que fue identificado molecularmente mediante el procedimiento de secuenciación nucleotídica de información forense (FINS, por sus siglas en inglés) utilizando un fragmento del gen ARNr 16S (518 pb). La secuencia de ARNr 16S de C. hellerii (número de acceso de GenBank: PQ800082) mostró un 83% de identidad con las secuencias de C. arcuatus en la base de datos de GenBank y las obtenidas aquí (números de acceso de GenBank: PQ800080 y PQ800081). Reportes de científicos ciudadanos en iNaturalist han indicado la presencia de C. hellerii en las aguas de Colima desde 2019. Sin embargo, esta es la primera vez que marcadores moleculares confirman su presencia en la costa del Pacífico mexicano. Se requiere más investigación para entender el grado de propagación de C. hellerii a lo largo de la costa del Pacífico mexicano, ya que su presencia desde 2019 podría indicar una población establecida en esta zona. La presencia de esta especie es preocupante, ya que podría afectar las poblaciones de otras especies nativas de jaiba de importancia comercial.]]></p></abstract>
