Abstract

Objective

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate in vitro the effect of Chlorhexidine gluconate at 0.12% in the adherence inhibition of Streptococcus mutans with provisional restorative at different exposure times (8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48 hours).

Material and methods

The study was of experimental type, for comparison groups. Total of 120 samples of Autopolymerizing PMMA divided in six groups were used (experimental and control groups).

Results

No significant differences were found in medias of the first four groups (p > 0.05). The others showed significant difference between the experimental and control subgroups.

Conclusion

The results demonstrated that the adherence of Streptococcus mutans to Autopolymerizing PMMA in vitro is inhibited after several applications of Chlorhexidine gluconate at 0.12%.

Key words: Chlorhexidine gluconate; Streptococcus mutans; autopolymerizing PMMA; provisional restorative
