Abstract:

This article analyzes, from the point of view of educational opportunities, the problems of using standardized tests to evaluate the learning of indigenous peoples. By combining concepts of crosscultural psychology, anthropology and psychometrics, the article presents the principal factors that would affect inferences made from the results of tests given to indigenous students. Lastly, the limitations of standardized tests are summarized, and some recommendations are provided for circumscribing the inferences based on the results of such tests.

Key words: evaluation of learning; intercultural education; equal opportunities; achievement tests; psychometrics
