Acevedoa nom. nov., a replacement name for Andersonia Arce & Lutz 2010 (Insertae sedis), preoccupied by Andersonia R.Br. 1810 (Plantae, Magnoliophyta, Ericaceae)

ABSTRACT

Andersonia Arce & Lutz, adopted name for a fructification genus, is an illegitimate homonym, therefore the following replacement name is proposed: Acevedoa nom. nov. for Andersonia Arce & Lutz (non R. Br. 1810 nec Willd. ex Roem. and Schult. 1819, nom. Illeg. nec Roxb 1832, nom. Illeg.). The name Andersonia was first validly published by R. Brown for a genus of flowering plants included in the family Ericaceae. Moreover, Acevedoa rastroensis comb. nov. is proposed.

RESUMEN

Andersonia Arce y Lutz, nombre utilizado para designar a un género de fructificación es un homónimo ilegitimo, es por ello que se propone el siguiente nombre de reemplazo: Acevedoa nom. nov. por Andersonia Arce & Lutz (non R. Br. 1810 nec Willd. ex Roem. y Schult. 1819, nom. illeg. nec Roxb. 1832, nom illeg.). El nombre Andersonia fue válidamente publicado por R. Brown para plantas con flores incluidas en la familia Ericaceae. Por otra parte, se propone Acevedoa rastroensis comb. nov.

In Arce & Lutz (2010) ("Fructification from Los Rastros Formation, Upper Triassic, San Juan Province, Argentina"), Andersonia Arce & Lutz 2010 was proposed for a new monotypic genus of fructification with uncertain affinities.

Diagnosis. Female lax strobilus, principal axis with pedunculate megasporophylls, alternately arranged, apparently planar, one ovule/ seed per peduncule. Platispermic seed, naked, without cupulate or winged, oval shaped, tapered apex and rounded base, simple, curved micropyle toward the axis.

The generic name Andersonia was previously used by R. Brown, based on a different type. Andersonia R. Br. 1810 is a previous and valid published name for extant flowering plants belonging to the family Epacridaceae = Ericaceae. Besides, Andersonia Willd. Ex Roem and Schult. 1819 is an illegitimate later homonym created as a genus of Loganiaceae. Andersonia Roxburgh 1832 is another illegitimate later homonym. This was a genus created and described by William Roxburgh in a flora of Indian plants.

Consequently, the genus Andersonia Arce & Lutz is an illegitimate later homonym under article 53.1 of the ICN (International Code of Nomenclature) (McNeill et al., 2012), for which a new generic name is required. Nevertheless, the specific name A. rastroensis is legitimate under article 55.1 of the ICBN. According to this, the epithet rastroensis is to be retained for the required combination.

We propose Acevedoa nom. nov. Arce & Lutz as a replacement name for Andersonia Arce & Lutz 2010, non R. Br. 1810 nec Roxb 1832, nom. Illeg. and the new combination Acevedoa rastroensis (Arce & Lutz) Arce & Lutz comb. nov. = Andersonia rastroensis Arce & Lutz.

Etimology. The generic name is in honor to Eva Beatriz Acevedo, retired technical staff of the paleontology laboratory of the Centro de Ecología Aplicada del Litoral (CECOAL), Corrientes, Argentina, whose support was crucial for the researchers of this Institute. The epithet rastroensis refers to Los Rastros Formation.
