Abstract
A series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) maps were produced using AVHRR images for wheat during the crop cycle October 1993Winter 1994 in the Yaqui valley, Sonora. The results from analysis of the time series and the value of 0.8 for the correlation coefficient (r2 0.63) between the values of the NDVI map for March 1991 and field data were considered adequate in this first study, which suggests that the methodology represents a useful option for the realtime monitoring of crops in Northwest Mexico.
