We are pleased to introduce this first issue of 2018, which highlights the variety of topics that our journal can cover. Geofísica Internacional was founded 58 years ago as a scientific journal of the Mexican Geophysical Union, edited and published by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. For 30 years Geofísica Internacional was a bilingual journal, first printing each article in Spanish and English, and later accepting articles in Spanish, English or French. In 1990, funding agencies for scientific journals decided that they should publish only in English. Although this caused some reduction in the production of research articles of regional interest, especially Ibero-American, it originated a greater contribution of the international scientific community. In 1990 Geofísica Internacional was included in the Science Citation Index.

In this era, the excellent management of the editorial committees, the technical editors and the directors, sub-directors and editors-in-chief of the journal such as Julián Adem, Manuel Maldonado- Koerdell, Ismael Herrera, Federico Sabina, Cinna Lomnitz and José Valdés have led our journal to have a considerable demand for the publication of original research results from around the world. We thus try to maintain the academic principles that have been in force since its first issue.

We now enter a new era in which we hope to further expand the expectations of the scope and scientific impact of Geofísica Internacional, by including in our editorial policy new modalities according to the development of scientific communication and the relevance of regional aspects in a general globalization scheme. These modalities include the submission of articles in Spanish again, with the same mechanisms of peer-reviewing that apply to articles submitted in English. This is a response to the demand of a growing Ibero-American community in the area of geosciences, enriched by specialists in the topic of natural hazards and risk management to publish research results of great regional interest.

Therefore, from this issue, the pages of Geofísica Internacional are open to the scientific community to make their results known in Spanish, with a summary in English. Articles submitted in English are still equally welcome with the same guarantees of objective and efficient peer arbitration.

We also open in this issue the modality of comments and replies, which stimulate academic discussion and broaden the perspective from which various scientific problems are posed and resolved.

Geofísica Internacional thus becomes an open access geoscientific journal, indexed in the Science Citation Index, which accepts manuscripts in two of the most widely used languages in the world.

We invite you to publish in our magazine.

Sincerely,

Servando De la Cruz-Reyna
