Abstract

NIVON BOLAN, Amalia. The civilizing project of Francisco Pimentel (1832-1893). Debates hist. [online]. 2022, vol.10, n.1, pp.39-64.  Epub May 02, 2022. ISSN 2594-2956.  https://doi.org/10.54167/debates-por-la-historia.v10i1.871.

The academic and political discourse of the philologist, historian, and writer Francisco Pimentel is analyzed from a historiographical approach, regarding the civilizing project for the benefit of the country and the different social sectors, especially the indigenous population. The approaches of Pimentel stand out due to the arguments presented of characters from the colonial era and the independent period concerning the ideas and practices that have degraded the indigenous people. Moreover, the acceptance of this discourse in science and art associations of his time, immersed in an intellectual vision of discrimination and racism of the living conditions of the indigenous people at the end of the 19th century is discussed. The paper also identifies characters and narratives that describe the behavior of these populations to distinguish the thought and behavior of the civilized social being, as well as the intervention of the State in the transformation of the country towards a mestizo Mexican society inclined towards the European way of life, according to the perception that being indigenous affected the nation's economic progress, social unity, and exercise of citizenship.

Keywords : racism; discrimination; indigenism; XIX century.
