TAVARES-DE LA PAZ, Luis A.; MIRANDA-AGUIRRE, Arturo P.; MORENO-JAIME, Brizio y ORTIZ-ARCE, Sharon. Should soft tissue sarcomas must be treated in high volume hospitals?. Gac. mex. oncol. [online]. 2021, vol.20, n.1, pp.36-41. Epub 16-Abr-2021. ISSN 2565-005X. https://doi.org/10.24875/j.gamo.20000099.
Background:
Treatment of soft tissue (STS) sarcomas in low-volume centers and unplanned surgery (US) represents a serious and frequent problem.
Objective:
To analyze the literature regarding the impact of performing US in non-specialized centers.
Methods:
A PubMed and EBSCO search was carried out with the keywords: STS, amputation, survival, US, high-volume centers. The results were analyzed and discussed by the authors
Results:
the treatment of SPB of extremities in low-volume hospitals and an US, are associated with worse local control, greater morbidity, and probability of amputation, although without impact on overall survival. In retroperitoneal or trunk sarcomas, the treatment in a low-volume center is associated with higher mortality at 60 and 90 days after surgery.
Conclusions:
the management of patients with SPB should be performed in centers specialized in sarcomas. In our country, more hospitals dedicated to this neoplasm and the creation of networks in sarcomas are needed, as well as national guides that speed up the referral of these patients.
