MIJARES-TOBIAS, José M.; MENDEZ-MERAZ, Adriana y SALGADO-NEVAREZ, Magdalena S.. Risk factors for thromboembolic disease in pediatric oncology. Gac. mex. oncol. [online]. 2020, vol.19, n.3, pp.83-89. Epub 23-Abr-2021. ISSN 2565-005X. https://doi.org/10.24875/j.gamo.19000324.
Pediatric patients with cancer have multiple risk factors to develop thromboembolic disease which have to be taken in mind during the course of diagnose and treatment. Until now the frequency of thromboembolic events in pediatric patients has been described as relatively low, however the consequences of thromboembolic events can be very severe. For this reason, the prevention of thromboembolic events was identified as a necessity in worldwide healthcare. The objective of this review article is to describe the pathogenic mechanisms that lead to thromboembolic disease in pediatric patients with cancer, to highlight the principal risk factors to develop thromboembolic disease and thromboprophylaxis strategies in research. This is necessary as a first step to recognize which patients have a high risk to develop an event of thromboembolism. This information is also important to implement protocols and strategies of thromboprophylaxis in oncology centers. In this way we look for prevention of further complications potentially threatening for organ function and life.
