Resumen

VARGAS-VARGAS, Rafael Antonio. Pez cebra (Danio rerio) y anestesia. Un modelo animal alternativo para realizar investigación biomédica básica. Anest. Méx. [online]. 2017, vol.29, suppl.1, pp.86-96. ISSN 2448-8771.

Basic biomedical research is a necessity in the health field, in order to evaluate diverse substances and procedures and to ensure the benefit of patients who will employ them. However there are limitations in our countries for this type of research because of the high budget demand, especially due to infrastructure and care that traditional animal models require and which must meet specific ethical standards. Having an animal model of low cost and high versatility can encourage preclinical research, especially in the field of anesthesiology. The zebrafish is an emerging animal model with many characteristics that places it as an attractive alternative model for basic biomedical research: it has high fertility, quick development since the embryonic stage to adult and the cost of infrastructure, supplies and reagents needed for breeding and reproduction are low. This work is a narrative review and the aim is to present studies showing where fish were used for drug research and to develop protocols with anesthetics. In addition, the general characteristics of zebrafish and some basic research work in the field of anesthesiology in which the zebrafish has been used as a model are presented. This information can be useful for professionals and researchers interested in conducting basic biomedical research with zebrafish as a low cost animal model.
