Abstract

JIMENEZ MEDINA, Luis Arturo. Religious spaces and practices: The cult of the Child Doctor in Tepeaca, Puebla. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.68, pp.135-156. ISSN 2448-8488.

This paper covers two issues: on the one hand, it presents some brief elements of what has, for some years now, been the cult of the Child Doctor of the Sick, present in the small town of Tepeaca de Negrete, located in the central region of Puebla State. The said cult has had an important influence in terms of summoning devotees through a variety of secular rituals and activities. This text focusses mainly on the religious activities held on April 30th, which is the date of the main festivities in honor of the Child Doctor, celebrated within the context of a commercial and artistic fair. On the other hand, with regards to the cult of the said child figure, it reflects on the use of both the religious and secular spaces by the believers and followers of the Child Doctor, as well as introducing a brief reflection on the use of the said spaces.

Keywords : Child Doctor; rituals; Tepeaca de Negrete; spaces; devotees.
