Abstract

ESTEINOU, Rosario. Intimacy and romantic love in Mexico between 1900 and 1950: speeches and norms. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.68, pp.35-57. ISSN 2448-8488.

This paper focuses on the analysis of a specific type of intimacy that developed among couples in relationships during the first half of the 20th Century in Mexican society. First, the analysis traces the presence of the romantic love complex through some of the sociocultural discourses and norms on women, the family and love during the said period, as well as the ways in which freedom in mate selection developed. These elements provide the context in which one specific type of intimate life was likely to unfold between couples, and which was characterized, among other things, by the projection of an anticipated future, a mystical union between the couple, a weak presence of eroticism in sexual life, and probably a low-level of emotional communication.

Keywords : Intimacy; romantic love; couple relationships; married life in Mexico.
