Resumen

BARCOS, María Fernanda. Villages and settlements in the American frontiers. A comparative approach based on the cases of Chihuahua (Mexico) and Buenos Aires (Argentina). Let. hist. [online]. 2020, n.22, pp.11-37.  Epub 30-Abr-2021. ISSN 2448-8372.  https://doi.org/10.31836/lh.22.7180.

The work analyzes the formation of villages during the 18th century as part of a common colonizing project for the North and South American borders. Two territorial districts in Mexico (Chihuahua) and Argentina (Buenos Aires) were selected because they shared some common aspects that make them comparable: they were deprived and subjected to indigenous attacks, and also devoid of stable population and “laborious”. Thus, in the last quarter of the 18th century the Spanish Crown project reorganize overseas territories and provide these areas with a more effective defense from a general rearrangement. Our analysis is based on the hypothesis that apparently distant processes had -at times and in certain circumstances- more common elements among themselves than with the colonial centers with which they were traditionally associated.

Palabras llave : borders; 18th and 19th centuries; towns; colonization; agrarian history; presidios; forts.
