Abstract

The present text has the aims to explain how was the process that led to the emergence of athletics in Mexico City and that allowed the organization of the first marathon. Athletics was introduced to the country by the Americans under the format of patriotic games, a model of celebration linked to the patriotic festivities that would later be adopted and used by Mexican society to make patriotic propaganda and to reconfigure its public image.
