Abstract

ROSAS SALAS, Sergio. A pastoral project in liberal Mexico. Ambrosio María Serrano and the diocese of Chilapa (1864-1876). Let. hist. [online]. 2017, n.17, pp.97-122. ISSN 2448-8372.

This paper analyzes the pastoral project of the first bishop of Chilapa, Ambrosio Maria Serrano (1864-1876), paying special attention to his biography and the background that led to the setting up of the diocese of Chilapa in 1862. It is argued that Serrano developed a pastoral project whose objective was to strengthen the church structure and the clerical authority in Guerrero through a constant sacramental administration, the promotion of religious practices and devotions, as well as the application of the papal guidelines issued by Pius IX. The bishop, then, implemented a pastoral that sought to strengthen the diocesan structures in Guerrero-Chilapa and the Catholic practice in the local society.

Keywords : Catholic Church; diocese of Chilapa; bishops; Ambrosio María Serrano; state of Guerrero.
