SANCHEZ DEL OLMO, Sara. Marginality, witchcraft and ethnicity in New Spain: Mariana de la Candelaria, a maleficent mulata in the eighteenth century. Let. hist. [online]. 2015, n.13, pp.15-33. ISSN 2448-8372.
This article analyzes the inquisitorial trial carried out in 1760 against Mariana de la Candelaria, a mulata accused of witchcraft. Through this essay, we would like to approach the female ideal prevailing in colonial society during this period, the transgressions against established rules and moral values committed by some women, and the punishment imposes by power to combat these threats. Finally, we try to highlight how ethnic, social and economic characteristics of the protagonist were crucial in the development of the trial.
