LOPEZ MATEO, Celina; RIOS MANRIQUEZ, Martha y CARDENAS ALBA, Luis Fernando. Competition, inclusion and financial sector development in Mexico. Investig. adm. [online]. 2018, vol.47, n.121. ISSN 2448-7678.
The role of banking for financial system development has been often discussed. The aim of this investigation is to analyze determinants of financial system development in Mexico within the period 2001-2014. Specifically, we consider competition levels, profitability, regulation and financial inclusion in banking industry. We use a quantitative method based in a data panel econometric model. Results indicate that financial system development depends directly on banking concentration and profitability. Some of the limitations of the work focus on the lack of statistical information for some years, as well as the non-differentiation between banks of domestic and foreign capital. The findings may be useful in the field of public policy. The originality and relevance lie in the study of the relationship between banking and financial system using a microeconomic perspective.
